have the pleasure of inviting you to their online conference:
COVID-19 & DEMOCRACY IN EAST AFRICA:PROTECTING VOTERS, PROTECTING THE VOTE

19-20 NOVEMBER 2020  |  ONLINE

Since 2008, democracy globally has backtracked, with worrying implications for long-term political peace and stability. This trend has been exacerbated in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 80 countries experiencing an erosion of  their democratic norms and liberties, according the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg.
While almost all African states have become multi-party democracies, the quality and legitimacy of elections are increasingly contested. In East Africa, many countries have recently faced or are facing imminent elections, creating new challenges whose impact will be felt for years to come. This on-line conference will explore the state of democracy in East Africa in the context of the coronavirus pandemic – looking at the challenges the region is facing and the opportunities which could be identified, particularly when it comes to protecting voters and protecting the vote. View full programmeJoin our incredible panel of speakers, including our VIPs:

  • Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria and Chair of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation
  • Ms. Graça Machel, international advocate for women’s and children’s rights, former freedom fighter and first Education Minister of Mozambique
  • Elhadj As Sy, Chairperson, Kofi Annan Foundation
  • Amb. Juma Mwapachu, President Emeritus, SID

We look forward to your participation – for the entire event or part of it – for what promises to be one of the most important events on the state of East African democracies this year.
