Multilingualism is a founding principle and a core value of the United Nations. Language touches all aspects of the work of the UN, both internally and externally, from decision making to communication, from humanitarian assistance to peacekeeping, or from procurement to legal affairs, to name only a few relevant areas.  Multilingualism is a key driver for achieving the goals as set in the Charter of the United Nations.  The General Assembly now advocates for its mainstreaming throughout the Organization, and the Secretary General has made multilingualism one of his priorities.

The Non-Governmental Organization Committee on Language and Languages (CoLL) is a substantive committee of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO).  The role of CoLL is to coordinate NGO activities so as to reinforce the efficacy of the United Nations system in the areas of language rights, language policies, and language practices, and to stress the importance of the linguistic dimension of all UN activities and programmes.  This panel is the inaugural event of CoLL and provides an overview of the current state of multilingualism and the United Nations from the perspectives of UN entities, Member States, and civil society.
