Hosted by Permanent Mission of Slovakia and the Permanent Mission of Germany to the UN, NGO Committee on Sustainable Development-NY and UN-Habitat Co-sponsored by UN2020, NGO Major Group Urban Cluster, SDG Impact Awards Community, COVIDxNOW, General Assembly of Partners, Humanitarian Focus Foundation, EBW Foundation, Youth for a Better World/MMUN/YIF, Global Family, Soroptimist International, Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization, CoNGO & UNA-USA Council Organizations.

Our UN75 Dialogue in observance of World Cities Day: “Better City, Better Life: Valuing our Communities and Cities” will address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our communities and cities while strengthening our resilience to build back better. The World Urban Forum – WUF10 and the UN Economist Network for the UN 75th Anniversary: Shaping the Trends of Our Time Report showed us the megatrends which shape our world. The present report focuses on five of these megatrends: climate change; demographic shifts, particularly population ageing; urbanization; the emergence of digital technologies and inequalities. While many are utilizing innovative communication platforms that allow for better engagement to strengthen the resilience of their communities and cities, through the pandemic, others without access are falling further behind. It is vitally important that we continue our focus on the SDGs and the UN2030 SD Agenda to build partnerships with Member States, UN-Habitat, national and local authorities as well as stakeholders from civil society and the private sector in order to be better prepared to achieve the inclusive, safe, resilient and healthier future we want with the UN we need – to “Leave No One Behind.”

IFA Virtual Town Hall on COVID-19 & Older People: Demographic Resilience in Times of Crisis

IFA Virtual Town Hall | COVID-19 and Older People: Demographic Resilience in Times of Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly demonstrated that combating age-based discrimination requires a shift in the narrative on the human rights of older persons and healthy ageing. Throughout the last several months of unprecedented hardships there have been extraordinary instances of resilience, perseverance and support among individuals and organizations working for and alongside older people. In the upcoming IFA Town Hall, the United Nations Populations Fund in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (UNFPA EECA) explores opportunities to shift the narrative by highlighting collaborative initiatives to mitigate risks for older people during the ongoing pandemic, and promote health and social programs in the context of demographic shifts which are built upon participatory and enabling environments for older people.

This town hall takes place at 07:00 am (Eastern Daylight Time) on Friday 25 September 2020 (additional time zones below):

Sao Paulo, Brazil: 08:00
Rome, Italy: 13:00

{Webinar} COVID-19, Amplifying Voices:  Our Lives, Our Say

The NGO Committee on Ageing calls your attention to a webinar on “COVID-19, Amplifying Voices:  Our lives, our say” being organized by the World Blind Union (WBU) on Friday, 4 September 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. EST

The aim of the webinar is to share the findings of a study conducted by the World Blind Union (WBU)examining the extent to which COVID-19 pandemic has exposed some deep structural inequalities in society. Data gathered from the study is evidencing that persons with disabilities, older persons, and persons from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds are among those hardest hit by the pandemic. While this report puts a spotlight on the voices of blind and partially sighted persons, many of the experiences shared strongly resonate with numerous other studies that are also highlighting how marginalised groups have been affected by this crisis. Through this report, WBU hopes to raise awareness on the specifics of what those challenges have meant in reality for its constituents, as well as shed light on what have been effective resilience strategies for them. The study was made possible with the support of CBM Global.

Panellists will include:

  • Ms. Maria Soledad Cisternas Reyes, the UN Special Envoy on Disability and Accessibility;
  • Mr. David Bainbridge, the Executive Director of CBM Global;
  • Mr. Danlami Umaru Basharu, Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD);
  • Ms. Rosario Galarza, member of the Executive Committee of Latin American Union of the Blind; and
  • Dr. Fred Schroeder,WBU President.
