The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women

In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1st as the International Day of Older People [IDOP] (GA Res. 45/106). Each year, the Vienna-based Committee on Ageing organizes a commemoration event around that date.

This year’s Vienna event will be celebrated in the afternoon of Monday, October 3rd, 2022 in the OJAB-Haus (Untere Augartenstrasse 31, 1020Wien). The general theme of the upcoming UN-IDOP is “The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women.”

Registration will be made available here soon: ngoageingvie.org

There are four sub-topics to be addressed by invited speakers, following the keynote speech by Austria’s Minister for Social Affairs, Mr. Johannes Rauch, who has confirmed his presence.

1) Ageing – So What? Mainstreaming Getting Older (Confirmed Speaker: Dr. Alexandre Sidorenko, Senior Advisor, European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, Vienna);

2) Older Persons: Strengthening Resilience to Mental Health Issues (Confirmed Speaker: Dr. Monika Zavis, Comenius University, Bratislavia, Slovakia);

3) Care and Caring in Europe: Common Challenges – Common Solutions? (Confirmed Speaker: Mr. Stecy Yghemonos, Executive Director Eurocarers, Brussels);

4) The Impact of Climate Change on Older People (Confirmed Speaker: Dr. Andrea Schmidt, Head of Department, Austrian National Public Health Institute, Vienna)

There will also be pre-recorded video greeting message from Dr. Monika Vana, MEP, Leader of the Austrian Green party delegation in the European Parliament, Brussels.

Note: The event starts at 13:30 hours and finishes at 16:00 hours, after which refreshments will be served. There is an opportunity to follow the parallel IDOP event at UN headquarters which starts at 10:00 hours New York time (= 16:00 hours Vienna time) via a large TV screen at the OJAB-Haus.

The Impact of Storytelling on Isolation in Older Adults

IFA Global Cafe: In Conversation with Dr. Victor Kuperman and Ms. Nancy Siciliana

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of connecting, communicating, and storytelling within the dialogue of isolation. The “Niagara Stories” project – run through a partnership between McMaster University, the Seniors’ Computer Lab Project, and Cyber Seniors’ Connected Communities Niagara – has allowed the opportunity for open conversations amongst Niagara residents. The project highlights the impact storytelling has on the sentiments of isolation, as well as how people communicate experiences through interaction and language.

To share their comprehensive insights, the Niagara Stories project organizers – Professor Victor Kuperman and Ms. Nancy Siciliana – will be leading a discussion on “The Impact of Storytelling on Isolation in Older Adults” in the IFA Global Cafe series.

In this Together: Share the Care, Transform Tomorrow

Dear friends,

We hope you can join Make Mothers Matter on July 11th for their virtual event taking place on the margins of HLPF, the annual UN conference that assesses progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Addressing the inequitable distribution of unpaid care work by ‘Sharing the care’ is in our view not only key to advance women’s rights and progress on gender equality, but also key to bring about some of the systemic changes which are so necessary to ensure a sustainable and resilient recovery from the pandemic, and to achieve the 2030 development agenda.

The main purpose of this event is to continue the discussion about how to lay the grounds for a more caring society, a society where care work is valued and more equally and fairly shared – between men and women, and between families and the rest of society, including communities, governments, and the private sector.
