This session will explore how the family empowers women and girls, particularly when men within the family value gender equality. Carolyn Pape Cowan, PhD is Adjunct Psychology Professor, Emerita, UC Berkeley. She co-directed three longitudinal intervention studies of how family relationships affect children’s adaptation. Co-author of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Life Change for Couples and co-editor of Fatherhood Today: Men’s Changing Role in the Family and The Family Context of Parenting in Children’s Adaptation to Elementary School, Pape Cowan consults internationally about the development, evaluation, and policy implications of family intervention results.
Philip A. Cowan, PhD is Psychology Professor, Emeritus, UC Berkeley. He served as director of the clinical psychology program and the Institute of Human Development and co-directed three longitudinal intervention studies of links between family relationship quality and children’s development. He is the author of Piaget with feeling, co-author of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Life Change for Couples, co-editor of four additional books and monographs and numerous scientific articles on implications for family policy.

Adverse Childhood Events: Protecting, Preventing, and Healing

The NGO Committee on the Family New York invites you to attend “Adverse Childhood Events: Protecting, Preventing, and Healing” on Thursday, February 25th, 1pm-2pm EST.

Concept note/background info:

Families around the world strive to provide children with a safe and nurturing home environment to empower their children to thrive. However, many families experience unexpected difficulties and trauma that can negatively influence this home environment. Parents, families, and communities can work to prevent, protect, and heal from these adverse events.

Speakers will present insights from their practical experiences working with parents and families to promote a healthy environment for children to thrive.

Prevent and Protect – Silvia Mazzarelli, Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC) and Arigatou International will look specifically at how parents can keep children safe online and prevent any access to harmful material and persons.

Heal – In the unfortunate event of early childhood trauma, Dr. Amanda Costello from the University of Delaware will discuss the Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) home-visiting parenting program that was developed by Dr. Mary Dozier. This evidence-based program helps caregivers to develop strong relationships with their children through positive feedback on parenting strategies. The program is currently offered in 19 US states and 8 countries.

The NGO Committee on Children’s Rights, committed to the well being of the World’s Children and the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), will hold its first meeting of the New Year!

January 21, 2021, 3:30-5:00pm on Zoom

We will focus on a short committee agenda followed by our guest speaker in commemoration of the UN International Education Day on Jan. 25. We invite school children and youth to attend this very educational presentation to learn some practical things each one of us can do to halt the destruction of our planet.

Guest speaker: Ms. Dale Walkonen

We have been hypnotized into thinking of ourselves as consumers in a limitless system of goods. If we realize that each thing, we buy is a vote for or against sustainability we can make better choices. From fashion to food, from travel to technology, what do we really need to have a good life? We will look at some practical answers to the question – What each of us can do to halt the destruction of our planet?

Speaker biography: Dale Walkonen is an Associate Producer at FacingFuture. TV, a Youtube channel dedicated to Climate Change. She was formerly a Professor of Communications at Concordia College, as well as a Legislative Consultant for the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Helping Children & Families Thrive in All Circumstances {in honor of the October 1989 adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child}

Please join us [at the NGO Committee on the Family] as we discuss important aspects of family life, in honor of the October 1989 adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Concept Note

In 1989, Member States adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a landmark treaty intended to ensure the protection and wellbeing of children around the world. In the intervening time, nearly every country has ratified the treaty, signaling commitment to its core principles of the best interest of the child, non-discrimination, right to life, survival, and development, and the right of the child to be heard. The Convention also notes that “the family, as the fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members and particularly children, should be afforded the necessary protection and assistance so that it can fully assume its responsibilities within the community.”

Since the Convention’s adoption, children’s welfare has improved greatly. Child poverty and mortality before age five have halved since then, and school attendance has risen. Countries have directed more attention, resources, and legislation to reducing child vulnerability and respecting the rights of children. Yet challenges remain. Poverty, natural disasters, conflict, family separation, and now a global pandemic affect children’s wellbeing. Times of crisis place stress on families and put children at risk. How can we ensure that children, even those in vulnerable situations, thrive?

This month, we are pleased to host two expert speakers who will address children’s vulnerability and ways to ensure that children and their families are supported to thrive in all circumstances and despite challenges. Ms. Rima Salah has extensive experience in the protection of children and peace and conflict resolution, through several leadership roles in United Nations entities, including serving as served as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General in the Peacekeeping Mission in Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT), Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and as a member of the UN High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations. Mr. Nuno Crisostomo has worked for child welfare with various non-governmental organizations, with the Portuguese government, and, from 2001, with UNICEF, most recently as an Emergency Specialist in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We hope you will join us as we learn from these two distinguished experts on this important topic.
