Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Hunger: Our Asks

In order to engage with the themes of the HLPF and CSocD60 in 2022, the NGO CSocD is hosting an event to supplement the priority themes of resilience and recovery from Covid-19, addressing multidimensional poverty and hunger. The event is titled ‘Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Hunger: Our Asks.’

True to the spirit of the Copenhagen Declaration of which this committee is guided by, this online webinar features three grassroots speakers from different continents who will share their unique experiences of poverty and  hunger during or prior to Covid-19 and the solutions they have created or propose to overcome these difficulties. After presenting accounts of their lived experiences, there will be reactions to the presentations by UN agencies and Member States. This will form the basis of an authentic dialogue between diverse voices in society.

This side event at the UN’s High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2021 will hear directly from community voices from different parts of the world on action steps needed for a sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. A priority of this session is to ensure the lived experiences of those who are most severely affected by the pandemic are directly included in national assessments of the inter-connected challenges faced by us all; and in setting priorities for a fairer and more sustainable future.

Building Back Fairer: Equality in a Post-COVID World

Dear colleagues,

OHCHR is co-organizing a high level event on inequalities titled “Building Back Fairer: Equality in a Post-COVID World” on Thursday 8 July 2021, 1.15-2.45pm (NY time), during the 2021 High Level Political Forum’s review of SDG 10 (reducing inequalities within and among countries).  This will feature a panel of expert speakers, including Winnie Byanyima, Jayati Ghosh, Max Lawson and Isabel Ortiz, with Ignacio Saiz serving as the moderator. Experts will examine the threats posed to our societies and our human rights by the current crisis and discuss how this could be a critical inflection point for creating more equal, inclusive and sustainable economies and societies.  It promises to be a dynamic discussion on the ‘tectonic shifts’ needed to ‘build back fairer’ in the post-COVID era.  The purpose of the event is also to raise the visibility of the issue of inequalities at the UN (during the review of SDG 10 at the HLPF) and to strengthen coordination of our response through the UN’s interagency Inequalities Task Team which OHCHR co-leads with UN Women.

High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2021

The high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF) is the core United Nations platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The meeting of the HLPF in 2021 will be held from Tuesday, 6 July, to Thursday, 15 July 2021, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. This includes the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Tuesday, 13 July, to Thursday, 15 July 2021 as part of the high-level segment of the Council.

The theme will be “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”.

The HLPF in 2021 will discuss Sustainable Development Goals 1 on no poverty, 2 on zero hunger, 3 on good health and well-being, 8 on decent work and economic growth, 10 on reduced inequalities, 12 on responsible consumption and production, 13 on climate action, 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions, and 17 on partnerships in depth. The Forum will also consider the integrated, indivisible and interlinked nature of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In the 2021 HLPF, participants will be able to explore various aspects of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the various measures and types of international cooperation that can control the pandemic and its impacts and put the world back on track to achieve the SDGs by 2030, within the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.

Countries will also carry out voluntary national reviews (VNRs) of their implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the 2021 HLPF. For more details, please click here.

Civil Society Forum ahead of UNECE RFSD 2021

Our yearly civil society forum ahead of UNECE’s Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (RFSD) will take place online, so we have split up our strategy meeting into two parts and an orientation session over the spacing of two days. ECOSOC Youth Forum 2021 [10th Anniversary]

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum will be held on 7 and 8 April 2021. The modalities of participation will depend on the evolving spread of COVID-19 and its impact on travel restrictions as well as considerations on the safety, health and wellbeing of participants.

The Forum provides a global platform for a candid dialogue among Member States and young leaders from around the world on solutions to challenges affecting youth wellbeing. It also serves as a unique space for young people to share their vision and actions as well as to provide youth perspectives on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

The 2021 Forum’s discussions will be guided by the overall theme of the 2021 ECOSOC and HLPF: “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: Building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. Consideration will also be given to the group of SDGs decided by Member States for in-depth discussions at the 2021 HLPF, namely, SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16 and 17.

HLPF virtual side event: Stop Child Abuse in Social Media

Dear Sisters and Friends,

Please register and join us for this very important side-event at #HLPF2020 on Wednesday, July 15, 1 – 2pm EST!  The theme: Stop Child Sexual Abuse in Social Media (OSEC) is one of the most serious cyber-crime and exploitation using technology platforms.  IT Private Sector is responsible to stop the exploitation using their social media platforms.  Maryknoll Sisters (ECOSOC accredited NGO)  is the lead organizer of this event in collaboration with other organizations.  In this panel we are joined by PREDA Foundation, a grassroots organization in Pampanga, Philippines to protect children from sexual exploitation; International Justice Missions’ *EndOSEC Center working with international, national and local authorities to catch perpetrators; Maryknoll Sisters Investment Advocacy using investors’ voice to address OSEC with IT companies.  From the Technology Sector,  Microsoft Digital Safety will share about their contributions to children safety online.  We also hope to hear from national governments about their actions.

The event will take a critical analysis of the role of digital technology specifically social media on the proliferation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). We would like to inquire what is being done globally and locally to address this issue. This topic address the interlinkages of SDG 1, 3, 5, and 16.
