World Down Syndrome Day

Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. It exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics and health.

Adequate access to health care, to early intervention programmes, and to inclusive education, as well as appropriate research, are vital to the growth and development of the individual.

In December 2011, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (A/RES/66/149). The General Assembly decided, with effect from 2012, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year. In order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome, the General Assembly invites all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations system and other international organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to observe World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner.

The fight for gender equality is no exception, from surging reports of domestic violence to disproportionate economic losses, gender disparity, and decreasing number of women who maintain full participation and decision-making at all levels. Women and girls around the world faced unprecedented suffering and hardships due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This humanitarian crisis is not only limited to women in urban settings living in developed and underdeveloped nations.

World Negotiation Day

Online event by UNITAR: World Negotiation Day

Upon the request of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the UNCTAD secretariat has the honour to transmit herewith the programme for the “World Negotiation Day”, organized by UNITAR and ADN Group on Tuesday, 9 March 2021.

For the second time in the history of world negotiation, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, ADN Group ​and Global Citizen Forum have come together to organise the World Negotiation Day.

During the second edition of the World Negotiation Day, talks will be given by negotiators from every horizon. Round table discussions will be held by experts in bilateral and multilateral negotiation, and Rabih El Haddad and Marwan Mery will discuss the importance of negotiation in the 21st Century.

Background Note

The global pandemic crisis has shown the great value of new technologies, especially for families. New technologies have enabled many people to continue working at home. They have helped many teachers and parents to continue to provide an education for their children when the schools closed. They have provided ways to stay connected with friends and relatives. They have been a way to reach out for help getting food and medicines. They have been a much-needed source of entertainment.

At the same time, new technologies have shown a darker side. Parents around the world are concerned about what impact the Internet is having on their children’s lives. Their concern is not so much about if they are spending too long online but more about how their online interactions are impacting on their health, happiness and wellbeing. They also worry about them being cyber-bullied, what their kids’ digital legacy will be and if they are safe online.

The event will focus on how policymakers can help parents and families to develop character and cyber-wisdom in their children. At the same time, it will spur parents’ proactivity in seeking to cultivate values, qualities and skills in their children.

COVID-19 and Older People Virtual Town Hall Series: A Conversation with Dr. Sonia Mukhtar

COVID-19 has propagated wide-reaching psychosocial impacts on older adults with financial losses being the least of concern. Mass fear of COVID-19 termed as “coronaphobia,” has generated a plethora of psychiatric manifestations. While the pandemic has made the COVID-19 vaccine the focal point, Dr. Sonia Mukhtar’s work on “psychosocial impact of COVID-19 on older adults” revealed the profound impacts the pandemic has had on the mental and physical well-being of older adults.

As the world reflects on the impact that COVID has had on older people in the context of the Decade of Healthy Ageing, advocating for psychosocial crisis prevention and intervention models to foster the abilities of older persons is more important than ever before. During a global pandemic where the needs of older persons need greater attention, attending to psychosocial needs aids to optimize healthy ageing.

Dr. Sonia Mukhtar is a COVID-19 researcher and a former-visiting faculty at University of Management and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. Dr. Mukhtar’s is certified in Integrative Counseling.

Dynamics of Accumulated Inequalities for Seniors In Employment (DAISIE)

Against the background of an ageing population, questions of extended working life have been
placed high on the global political agenda. At the same time, growing research indicates that
employment opportunities and working conditions for seniors are often at odds with these
political initiatives and that there are increasing inequalities associated with the normative
expectations associated with ageing at work. Unequal conditions in terms of health,
involvement in informal care and the age climate of different workplaces are examples of
factors that risk creating accumulated inequalities in an extended working life.

Based on analysis of the gendered impacts of policies aimed at extended working life and
comparisons of three contrasting occupations (health, transport, financial services) in the Czech
Republic, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK, the NORFACE DIAL (Dynamics of
Inequality Across the Life Course: Structures and Processes) project Dynamics of Accumulated
Inequalities for Seniors in Employment (DAISIE) has focused on issues such as the current
working conditions of the 50+ group across countries and occupations, the combined effect of
employment histories, family life events and intergenerational care services on the dynamics of
inequality in later life.

This final conference is an opportunity for members of the DAISIE project and colleagues from
the broader international research community to present papers in relation to work in later life
and accumulated inequalities.
In particular, we invite paper proposals focusing on:
1. Extending working lives policies and organizational practices
2. Combining extending working lives with caring and other unpaid commitments
3. Older workers and ageism
4. Older workers and digitalization
5. Older workers and health
6. Older workers and working conditions
7. The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on older workers

We invite submissions of 250-300 words abstracts via the conference webpage: kau.se/en/daisie
Please note that abstract submissions shall include: chosen focus (see list above), names of all
co-authors, and name and contact details of the corresponding author. Deadline for submission is January 15th, 2021.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Health: Inter-linkage of the Health of People and Planet

Join UNESCO for a global series of online workshops on how to transform society through learning with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), launching in September 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tragic impact on human life around the world: killing hundreds of thousands of people, causing global economic decline and school closures in over 180 countries. ESD reassesses what we learn, where we learn and how we learn to ensure we develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that enable us to make informed decisions and actions on global problems such as the climate crisis and the COVID-19 crisis.

Transforming learning to transform societies towards sustainability is the aim of the ESD for 2030 framework. This roadmap for ESD in 2020-2030 will be officially launched at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD taking place on 17-19 May 2021, in Berlin, Germany. In the lead-up to the World Conference, UNESCO invite you to a series of ESD online workshops in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner. The discussions and results from the series of online workshops will be used to further develop the conference program and help shape the agenda in Berlin next year.

Dec. 9, 2020 will be the 4th session in the series: ESD and global health: Inter-linkage of the health of people and planet

This online workshop focus on the interconnectedness of the health of people and planet as highlighted through the COVID-19 pandemic, and questions how this can be better reflected in ESD practices.
