Progress Towards Gender Equality: A Data and Policy Dialogue

As we mark the 25th anniversary of the landmark Beijing Declaration to advance women’s rights, new data from the UN Secretary-General’s report The World’s Women 2020: Trends and Statistics show that hard-earned gains in gender equality are being challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. UN DESA is holding a global data and policy online dialogue to discuss how much the world has risen to fulfill the strategic objectives of the Beijing Platform for Action and address policy actions needed to build a New Social Contract and improve equality for all.

Twenty-First Session of the Working Group on the Right to Development

Development is a Human Right: The twenty-first session of the Working Group on the Right to Development

3-7 May 2021, Ariana 1, Palais des Nations, Geneva, due to the COVID-19 pandemic

At this session, the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development will continue to review progress made in the implementation of the right to development.

It will hold an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the right to development and consider contributions made by States and stakeholders to the implementation of the right to development.

The Working Group will also commence the elaboration of a draft legally binding instrument on the right to development.

Accreditation

UN Member and Observer States, specialized agencies and other international organizations, national human rights institutions with “A status” accreditation, and NGOs with ECOSOC consultative status may participate in the Working Group.

All participants are required to register using the registration form for the 21st session of the Working Group.

Nuclear Weapons and International Law in the Contemporary Era

You are invited to: A Virtual Conference on Nuclear Weapons and International Law in the Contemporary Era

Seeking to address the huge gap in public awareness of nuclear weapons risk and applicable international law, the New York State Bar Association International Section is holding an all-day virtual conference that will bring together leading public officials, thought-leaders, policymakers, and experts for a comprehensive look at this often ignored subject.

According to Professor Charles J. Moxley, Jr., an LCNP director and a conference organizer, “International law may well hold the world’s best prospect for addressing and getting ahead of the existential risks posted by nuclear weapons.”

Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy (LCNP) is one of the co-sponsors of the conference and is well-represented in the program.

  • Professor Moxley, Kathleen Lawand of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Professor David Koplow of Georgetown Law
  • Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, will deliver a keynote address, followed by a panel on the role of the United Nations featuring her, LCNP Senior Analyst John Burroughs, Allison Pytlak of Reaching Critical Will/WILPF, and LCNP Executive Director Ariana Smith (moderator)
  • Jerry Brown, former Governor of California and Executive Chairman, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, will engage in a dialogue on responding to the greatest threats to humanity with Jonathan Granoff, President of Global Security Institute and an LCNP director
  • A panel on advancing the rule of law and morality in relation to nuclear weapons includes Jacqueline Cabasso, Executive Director of Western States Legal Foundation, LCNP advisor Laurie Ashton, an attorney who served on the legal team for the Marshall Islands in its nuclear disarmament cases in the International Court of Justice, and Tom Collina, Director of Policy, Ploughshares Fund, and co-author with William Perry of The Button

Additional panels will address nuclear weapons risks, consequences and responses, and the treaty regime on nuclear weapons.

Please join UN DESA on 29 October for a conversation with global leaders in science and technology that will assess the science-based policies and innovations that have developed during the pandemic, identifying good practices as well as areas where work is still needed. The event will feature a broad panel discussion with experts, followed by regional breakout sessions led by UN DESA (English) and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (Arabic). The event will discuss these questions, among others:

  • What are concrete examples of innovations that have helped people or institutions deal with the effects of COVID-19?
  • How can the international community help to ensure that research and innovations related to COVID-19 are accessible to all?
  • What needs to be done to better engage society, counter misinformation and overcome apathy towards science in policy-making?

[5-year UN observance] World Statistics Day

At its 41st Session in February 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission proposed celebrating 20 October 2010 as World Statistics Day (Decision 41/109).

Acknowledging that the production of reliable, timely statistics and indicators of countries’ progress is indispensable for informed policy decisions and monitoring implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, the General Assembly adopted on 3 June 2010 resolution 64/267, which officially designated 20 October 2010 as the first ever World Statistics Day under the general theme “Celebrating the many achievements of official statistics.”

In 2015, with resolution 96/282, the General Assembly decided to designate 20 October 2015 as the second World Statistics Day under the general theme “Better data, better lives,” as well as to celebrate World Statistics Day every five years on 20 October.

MESSAGE TO PARTIES, OBSERVER STATES AND OBSERVER ORGANIZATIONS:

Information regarding SB 52: Referring to the communication dated 1 April 2020 indicating that in light of the COVID-19 situation, the Bureau of the COP, CMP and CMA decided that the fifty-second session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 52) and the fifty-second session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 52) would be held from 4 to 12 October 2020.

The message further indicated that, taking into consideration the uncertainty of how the COVID-19 crisis would evolve, the Bureau would review the feasibility of convening the sessions on the new dates. On Wednesday, 17 June 2020, the Government of Germany decided to extend the ban on major events until the end of October at the earliest. Additionally, travel restrictions continue to be extended throughout the world.

Subsequently, the Bureau met on Monday 22 June 2020 to consider these new developments. Having considered the circumstances, which would preclude the secretariat’s ability to organize the subsidiary body sessions (SB 52) in an inclusive manner with the participation of all Parties, the Bureau decided to postpone SB 52 to 2021. The Bureau, in conjunction with the secretariat, will consider new dates at its next meeting. Information on dates and all relevant information will be communicated in due course.
