GA-ECOSOC Thematic Event “El Niño 2023-2024: Actions for the safety, sustainability and resilience of people and the planet”

EVENT:  GA-ECOSOC Thematic Event “El Niño 2023-2024: Actions for the safety, sustainability and resilience of people and the planet”

The General Assembly expressed its deep concern over the current El Niño phenomenon in resolution 78/152, and requested the President of the General Assembly and the President of the Economic and Social Council to co-organize a one-day dedicated thematic event no later than April 2024, with the support of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, the World Meteorological Organization and other relevant entities of the United Nations system, to discuss action-oriented recommendations to address the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the current El Niño phenomenon on affected countries, in order to provide substantive input to the report of the Secretary-General to be submitted to the General Assembly at its seventy-ninth session.

 

Objective

This one-day dedicated thematic event will consider the improved opportunities that recent advancements in climate predictions bring and the range of actions required to turn enhanced scientific predictability into global, regional, national and local level plans and actions that minimize and address the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the 2023-2024 El Niño phenomenon conditions on affected countries.

 

Format

The event will commence with an opening segment and a fireside chat, followed by a plenary segment, two panels and a closing.

  1.  Panel 1 will focus on: Actions to reduce El Niño 2023/24 risks.
  2. Panel 2 will focus on: Long-term strategies to create the enabling institutional and policy environment required to take effective action.

 

Participation

The meeting will be open to Member States and Observers, the United Nations system, ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.

 

Outcome

An informal Presidents’ summary will be submitted to provide substantive input to the report of the Secretary-General, in accordance with GA resolution 78/152, and will be circulated to all Member States and Observers.

 

NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC are invited to submit their Expression of Interest at: https://indico.un.org/event/1011313/  Statements must be limited to 2 minutes per person, to be delivered at the Thematic Event “El Niño 2023-2024 on 30 April 2024.

 

* Deadline: The deadline for submission of your statement is 24 April 2024 by 5:00 pm, Eastern Time.  Final selection of the statements will be made by the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly. Selected NGOs will be notified by email before the event.

 

The event is open to representatives of NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC with active UN grounds passes. The meeting will also be broadcast live on UN Web TV
