Assuring Human Rights for Older Persons in Long Term Care Facilities: Implementing Lessons Learned

Wed Apr 5; 1:15pm – 2:30pm

Organizer Gray Panthers

Format of the Event Virtual

Location Online

Everywhere, COVID exposed inequities and unleashed a torrent of disease and death, especially among older persons. Nowhere more than in the long term care sector, where the under-appreciation of the human rights of older persons becomes increasingly evident. This applies both to developed and developing countries. With a deeper understanding, we have the opportunity to implement lessons learned to properly incorporate respect for the human rights of older persons into the evolution of long term care systems – both residential and family care giving.

This discussion examines problems, cautionary tales, and solutions while re-imagining long term care with human rights as a guiding force.

Guiding Questions

  1. What are human rights of older persons in long term care facilities?
  2. Why were catastrophes from COVID created in long term care facilities? What happened in your country with respect to COVID and older persons receiving long term care?
  3. How are the voices of older persons included when nations develop or refine their residential long term care facilities? We presume they are not included.
  4. What lessons must be learned for developed and developing nations with regard to residential long term care? How are the human rights of older persons acknowledged and protected?
  5. Give specific examples of good practice and bad practice to assure human rights for older persons in residential long term care facilities.
  6. What is your “call to action” to protect human rights for older persons in long term care facilities? What needs to be accomplished? How do we assure that the precious lives lost were not lost in vain?
