The International Sociological Association (ISA) and HelpAge International are pleased to host this side event on the need for a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. We will discuss issues that significantly impact older persons’ equality and inclusion as well as why we need a UN convention to protect the human rights of older adults.
The event is moderated by Dr. Geoffrey Pleyers (FNRS Researcher and Professor, University of Louvain; Belgium), the Vice President of the International Sociological Association who is responsible for the research divisions of the organization. There are three presenters. Marijke De Pauw, HelpAge International’s Global Rights Policy Adviser, will talk about why we need a binding instrument on the rights of older persons and present some of HelpAge’s tools and resources. Dr. Lucie Vidovićová (Assistant Professor, Masaryk University; Czech Republic and a Vice President of ISA’s research division on Aging (RC 11) will speak about her work on elder abuse. Dr. Jan Marie Fritz (Professor, University of Cincinnati; Distinguished Visiting Professor, University of Johannesburg; ISA Executive Committee Member and a past President of the ISA’s Clinical Sociology research division – RC46) will discuss a rather hidden and unaddressed human rights issue, the need to eliminate the mandatory retirement of older adults. Mandatory retirement policy is a structural factor that can significantly contribute to discrimination against older adults.
A resource list will be available after March 28 to all those who request it. It may be obtained from Dr. Jan Marie Fritz at jan.fritz@uc.edu
