United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2025 From Resolution to Convention: Uniting for the Rights of Older Persons

IDOP 2025 takes place at a pivotal time, following the recent UN Human Rights Council resolution to begin drafting a new international convention on the rights of older persons. This year’s commemoration highlights the need for a legally binding instrument that reflects the lived realities of older persons worldwide. It calls on governments, UN agencies, civil society, and national institutions to engage meaningfully in this process, while reaffirming the status of older persons as rights-holders and active members of society. IDOP 2025 also promotes intergenerational dialogue and coordinated action at all levels to ensure ageing is recognized as a shared human experience-and a global priority.
