SUMMARY:2024 UN Civil Society Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi.\nThe United Nations Civil Society Conference is the premier event on the civil society calendar at the United Nations. The Conference offers civil society organizations an opportunity to put a global perspective on a specific issue and brings together senior UN System officials\, prominent international civil society organizations\, youth changemakers\, academia\, public opinion makers\, and international media to discuss issues of global concern. This international forum\, expected to host some 1500 participants\, will provide preliminary discussions and data ahead of the Summit of the Future in September 2024 at the UN Headquarters in New York. \nSince 1947\, sixty-eight civil society conferences have resulted in successful outcomes due to previous interactions with civil society organizations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Civil society organizations were present in San Francisco at the founding of the United Nations and have been an integral part of the United Nations ecosystem from the outset. As part of our consultations\, civil society has called for better engagement with the United Nations system. I believe that it is essential for the United Nations to listen to\, coordinate with\, and engage with civil society.” \nOur Common Agenda. Chapter V. Paragraph 121 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Language Services and the European Union Special Briefing
DESCRIPTION:**Call for Participation**\n\nLanguage Services and the European Union\nSpecial Briefing\n\n \n8 May 2024\n\n\n\nThe NGO Committee on Language and Languages will hold a special briefing on language services and the European Union on 8 May 2024.\n\nWith twenty-four official languages\, the European Union (EU) is rich in linguistic and cultural diversity.  Implementing multilingualism in the day-to-day work of EU institutions requires robust language services for interpretation and translation.  This special briefing addresses the administration of these services (e.g.\, how they are funded; how resources\, time\, and workload are allocated; and how it is staffed) as well as practical considerations for implementing language services for highly multilingual intergovernmental work.  Focusing specifically on the European Parliament\, officials from the Directorate General for Logistics and Interpretation for Conferences and the Directorate General for Translation will discuss the provision of high-quality interpretation in meetings\, training and succession planning that ensures sustainable and flexible service\, managing interpretation processes\, and strategic planning that transforms top-level vision into act on.\n\n\nFormat\nThe meeting will take place on 8 May 2024 from 09:00-10:00 EDT/New York via Zoom.  It is anticipated that interpreting will be provided in English\, French\, and Spanish.  Statements will be made by\n\nAlison Graves\nDirector\, Directorate General for Logistics and Interpretation for Conferences\nEuropean Parliament \nMads Nyegaard Outzen\nHead\, Strategy and Innovation Unit Directorate General for Translation\nEuropean Parliament\n\nOpen discussion following the statements will be moderated by Professor Francis M. SUMMARY:Informal plenary meeting of the General Assembly to mark the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development
DESCRIPTION:EVENT:  Informal plenary meeting of the General Assembly to mark the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development \nDATE:  Monday\, 29 April 2024\, 3-6 pm \nVENUE:  Trusteeship Council Chamber\, UN Headquarters\, New York \nIn 1994\, Governments came together in Cairo\, Egypt at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and adopted its Programme of Action. This landmark agreement transformed global thinking on population and development and defined a bold agenda\, placing people’s dignity and rights at its heart. The Programme of Action affirmed that inclusive and sustainable development requires a people-centred approach that addresses the needs\, aspirations\, and rights of all persons. The Programme of Action also recognized the critical role of civil society\, including women- and youth-led organizations\, and of the private sector in supporting its implementation. \nThirty years after the Cairo Conference\, we shall take stock of the progress made in implementing the Programme of Action while also identifying areas where further action is needed. Reaffirming the importance of implementing the Programme of Action for achieving all Goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is important – in particular\, for Goal 1 on ending poverty\, Goal 3 on healthy lives and well-being\, Goal 4 on quality education\, Goal 5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment\, Goal 10 on reduced inequalities and Goal 13 on climate action. The people-centred approach of the ICPD and the special attention it gives to vulnerable populations helps to ensure that no one is left behind. \nSince 1994\, the world has experienced new challenges and opportunities. Major occurrences in recent years – including the COVID-19 pandemic and rapid advancements in technology – have led the world to a crucial crossroad that necessitates recommitment to the values that underpin multilateralism. We must ensure that our approaches and our solutions are fit for purpose. \nThirty years after its adoption\, we have seen tangible gains and progress from the implementation of the Programme of Action which include poverty reduction\, life expectancy and food security. \nMaternal deaths have declined\, and access to primary education has expanded for both boys and girls. \nHowever\, progress has been uneven both within and among countries and the multifaceted crises facing the world today place many of the gains made so far\, at risk. Amidst this\, the Programme of Action remains a critical framework for addressing challenges and seeking opportunities in the area of population and development for the benefit of present and future generations. \nWith merely six years remaining until 2030\, urgent and concerted efforts are required to steer the global community back towards a trajectory that aligns with our aspirations of a world where no one is left behind. \nThe upcoming Summit of The Future is an opportunity to actively generate transformative action that would see us scale up commitments towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals. \n  \nObjective \nThe meeting aims to mark the 30th Anniversary of the ICPD and will focus on leveraging the ICPD Program of Action in moving towards inclusive\, resilient\, equitable and peaceful societies that place people at the centre of development. \n  \nFormat \nThe meeting will include an opening and a plenary segment. Member states wishing to deliver statements during the plenary segment are requested to inscribe through the e-delegate portal. The time limit for statements will be three minutes for individual delegations and five minutes for statements made on behalf of a group of States. \nThe meeting will be open to Member States and Observers\, as well as the United Nations system and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations. \nThe event is open to representatives of NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC with active UN grounds passes. The meeting will also be broadcast live on UN Web TV

SUMMARY:Transforming Economies through Integrated National Financing Frameworks (INFFs)
DESCRIPTION:BACKGROUND\nIntegrated national financing frameworks (INFFs) represent a holistic approach to mobilizing\, allocating and managing financing for development to achieve national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They also aim to optimize resource utilisation\, enhance transparency\, and foster coherence in policymaking. Since the introduction of the INFF concept in the 2015 Addis Ababa Action Agenda\, and subsequent development of global INFF guidance\, over 80 countries have started to implement INFFs. Country experiences with INFFs demonstrate their transformative potential in diverse contexts and underscores the adaptability of INFFs to help governments address unique challenges while fostering synergies between different stakeholders\, such as development partners\, the private sector\, civil society\, and academia.\nGlobal support for INFF implementation has also steadily increased\, including through a project of the 13th tranche of the Development Account (DA13)\, implemented jointly by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)\, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)\, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)\, Economic Commission for Europe (ECE)\, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)\, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The $2.3 million DA project\, “Towards Integrated National Financing Framework\,” commenced in 2021\, targeting over 10 countries and is due to conclude in 2024. This DA project has contributed to the broader efforts by the UN system to support countries in implementing INFFs\, with support from the Joint SDG Fund\, and Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation\, and expanding to the G20 voluntary framework for support for INFFs. In 2022\, the INFF Facility was set up to respond to the demand for support from countries developing INFFs. The Facility is a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)\, UN DESA\, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and is supported by the European Union and the Governments of Italy and Sweden. \n \n\nABOUT THE EVENT\nUNDESA\, in collaboration with the five United Nations Regional Commissions and UNCTAD are organizing an INFF Event to mark the culmination of activities undertaken over the last 3 years as part of the DA13 INFF project. With the theme of “Transforming Economies through Integrated National Financing Frameworks (INFFs)\,” the Event provides a platform for the countries involved (Belarus\, Burkina Faso\, Colombia\, Dominican Republic\, Egypt\, Indonesia (TBC)\, Jordan (TBC)\, Kyrgyzstan\, Pakistan\, Zambia) to share their experiences. This includes sharing valuable lessons and identifying common challenges faced in applying INFFs to finance sustainable development at the national level. The Event aims to critically examine these experiences to identify practical insights that can improve the future application of INFFs\, along with identifying strategies that can enhance the effectiveness and scalability of INFFs so that they can be adapted to various contexts and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to explore how INFFs can be refined and expanded to consider the dynamic global economic landscape and the evolving nature of development financing. The Event will also highlight the convergence of support for INFF implementation by countries\, development partners\, private sector\, civil society\, and academia.\nDRAFT PROGRAMME\n\n\n\n\nTIME \n\n\nSESSION \n\n\n\n\n10:00-10:15 \n\n\nOpening session \nFacilitator: Ms. Shari Spiegel\, Director\, Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO)\, UNDESA \n\nMr. Li Junhua\, Under-Secretary-General\, UNDESA\n\n\n\n\n\n10:15-11:40 \n\n\nSession 1: Advancing resilient and inclusive economies through INFFs \nThis session aims to highlight the versatility and adaptability of INFFs as a potent tool for advancing resilient and inclusive economies. SUMMARY:Informal interactive dialogue on commodity markets
DESCRIPTION:EVENT:  Informal interactive dialogue on commodity markets \nDATE:  Friday\, 26 April 2024\, 10 a.m. \nVENUE:  Trusteeship Council Chamber\, UN Headquarters\, New York \n  \nIn line with General Assembly resolution 78/138\, the President of the General Assembly for its seventy-eighth session will convene a one-day informal interactive dialogue “to review world commodity trends and prospects and possible strategies for economic and export diversification\, as well as value addition for sustainable development\, particularly in commodity-dependent developing countries\, with the aim of sharing experiences and lessons learned.” \n  \nObjective \nThe event will discuss the persistence of commodity dependence\, examine the emerging concept of a modern-day commodity dependence trap that hinders diversification in developing countries\, and discuss possible pathways for countries to diversify into higher value-added activities and implement a sustainable structural transformation. The event will spotlight the critical role of economic diversification for developing countries to move out of commodity dependence and accelerate their progress towards sustainable development. \nThe event also marks 60 years of discussion on the relationship between commodities trade and development in the context of UNCTAD. \n  \nFormat \nThe event will consist of an opening segment\, two interactive panels\, and a closing segment. In addition to Member States and Observers of the General Assembly\, the meeting will be open to the United Nations system and relevant stakeholders. \nThe following are the two interactive panels: \n  \nInteractive Panel 1: Is there a modern-day commodity dependence trap? \nThis panel will examine the persistence of a state of commodity dependence in developing countries and explore the following guiding questions: \n\nIs there a modern-day commodity dependence trap? What are its elements\, characteristics\, and mechanisms?\nWhat shape does such a trap take in today’s economic environment?\nHow can new developments\, such as the increasing demand for CETM and challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events\, reshape a commodity dependence trap in the twenty-first century?\nWhat collective action can be taken by Member States?\n\nInteractive Panel 2: Economic diversification to reduce dependence and increase the resilience of commodity-dependent developing countries. \nThis panel presents an opportunity for Member States to share their perspectives on ways to deliver urgent economic diversification of commodity-dependent developing countries to reduce their dependence and increase resilience. Some guiding questions for discussion include: \n\nWhat are the emerging challenges and prospects for commodity-dependent developing countries to implement a successful diversification strategy?\nWhat specific strategies can these countries adopt to enhance their technological capacity and innovation ecosystems for diversification?\nWhat are the key sectors or industries that offer the greatest potential for driving structural transformation and resilience in commodity-dependent developing countries?\nWhat innovative financing mechanisms can support the diversification efforts of commodity-dependent developing countries?\nHow can international financial institutions and development banks play a role in providing the necessary capital for diversification projects?\nHow can Member States and stakeholders support sustainable and inclusive diversification of these countries?\n\n  \nOutcome \nThe outcome of the interactive dialogue will be a President’s summary to be circulated to all Member States and Observers\, the United Nations System\, and other stakeholders. \nNGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC are invited to submit their Expression of Interest at: https://indico.un.org/event/1011312/ Statements must be limited to 2 minutes per person\, to be delivered at the Informal interactive dialogue on commodity markets on 26 April 2024. \n* Deadline: The deadline for submission of your statement is 22 April 2024 by 5:00 pm\, Eastern Time.  Final selection of the statements will be made by the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly. Selected NGOs will be notified by email before the event. \nThe event is open to representatives of NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC with active UN grounds passes.

SUMMARY:CONFERENCE OF NGOs IN CONSULTATIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED NATIONS (CoNGO) Regional Committee in Asia-Pacific (RCAP)
DESCRIPTION:CONFERENCE OF NGOs IN CONSULTATIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED NATIONS (CoNGO) Regional Committee in Asia-Pacific (RCAP)\n  \nBangkok\, Thailand – April 25-26\, 2024\n  \nNotification and Invitation to RCAP 2024 Addressed to NGOs/CSOs in the Asia-Pacific Region \n  \nA. CoNGO has organized an RCAP Session each of the past six years generously hosted by Siam University\, Bangkok\, thanks to the hospitality of SU President Dr Pornchai Mongkhonvanit. During the Covid Pandemic\, the event was held online to widen the sphere of participation for those unable to travel. RCAP provides an opportunity to strengthen regional solidarity and understanding\, to exchange experience in crucial Sustainable Development and related areas\, and to create new and invigorating partnerships. \nB. RCAP is always held during the week of the Plenary Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to encourage attendance at both events. RCAP meets on the last days of ESCAP\, when the main debates are over and the plenary is mostly engaged in adopting concluding resolutions. This year the ESCAP Plenary is scheduled a month earlier than usual\, namely April 22-26\, so RCAP will meet at Siam University on Thursday April 25 and Friday April 26. (See programme) \nC. RCAP has two main features. The first is an analysis of regional\, national or local implementation by Asia-Pacific NGOs/CSOs of the Sustainable Development Goals that are up for review this year at the UN High Level Political Forum (UN.HQ\, July 8-17). This year the HLPF focusses on SDGs 1\, 2\, 3\, 16\, 17\, and its overall theme is “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable\, resilient and innovative solutions.” \nCoNGO hereby invites Asia-Pacific NGOs/CSOs to submit a report (4-8 pages) on their implementation activities for all or some of the five SDGs mentioned. Please focus on illustrating\, by on-the-ground examples\, the second half of the long UN title\, namely the EFFECTIVE DELIVERY OF SUSTAINABLE\, RESILIENT AND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS. Please send each report to firstvp@ngocongo.org by April 7 2024. \nD. The second feature of RCAP 2024 will again be an Open International Panel\, this year on the subject: \n“AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND YET REAL – FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT \nAND HUMANITY”. \nThe themes will be: \n– AI: HUMAN RIGHTS AND ETHICAL DIMENSIONS \n– AI AND DIGITAL JUSTICE (Access and technology) \n– REGIONAL ASIA-PACIFIC AI RESEARCH SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE \nDEVELOPMENT \nWe invite Asia-Pacific NGO/CSO with expertise in these areas to propose the name \nand qualifications of a speaker. Please send such proposals with supporting \ndocumentation to firstvp@ngocongo.org by April 7 2024. \nE. Please consult the attached programme and logistical information\, as well as \nregistration information. We greatly look forward to welcoming once again many \nAsia-Pacific NGOs and CSOs to Bangkok in April. \nCyril Ritchie\nCoNGO First Vice President\nfirstvp@ngocongo.org \n  \nProgramme\, Logistical Information\, Registration \nVenue: Siam University\, 38 Petkasem Road\, Phasicharoen\, Bangkok \nUniversity Building 19\, 18 th Floor\, Telephone +66(0)2867.8088 \n  \nTHURSDAY April 25 (First Session) \n11.00 – 12.30   Registration and Set up of exhibits \n12.30   Lunch \n15.00 – 18.00 \nOpening with musical performance\, courtesy of Siam University \nWelcome by Pornchai Mongkhonvanit\, President of Siam University \nOpening Statement by Cyril Ritchie\, CoNGO First Vice President \nPresentations of Asia-Pacific NGOs/CSOs actions on implementing the SDGs: \n“Effective delivery of sustainable\, resilient and innovative solutions” \nDiscussion and analysis \n18.00-19.00   Reception \nFRIDAY April 26 (Second and Third Sessions) \n09.00   CoNGO Presidential Statement by Liberato Bautista\, via Zoom from the USA \n09.30 – 12.15 \nOpen International Panel: “AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND YET REAL – FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND HUMANITY” \nThemes: \n\nAI: HUMAN RIGHTS AND ETHICAL DIMENSIONS\nAI AND DIGITAL JUSTICE\nREGIONAL ASIA-PACIFIC AI RESEARCH SUPPORTING\nSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT\n\n12.30 Lunch \n14.00 – 16.30 \nFurther discussion and analysis of SDG implementation: cross-cutting issues; \nmutual support; partnerships; relationship to UN.ESCAP\, to the HLPF\, and to \nthe UN Summit of the Future (UN.HQ\, September 22-23\, 2024) \nConcluding statement by the President of Siam University \nConcluding statement by the CoNGO First Vice President \n17.00   Closed meeting of the RCAP Steering Committee \nGeneral and practical information \nA. Most of you will know that at the July 2024 HLPF the following Asia-Pacific countries will offer Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs): Laos\, Micronesia\, Nepal\, Palau\, Samoa\, Solomon Islands\, and Vanuatu. CoNGO has consistently advocated that national NGOs be involved by each government in the preparation of its VNR. \nB. At RCAP 2024 we shall offer congratulations to the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE) which celebrated its 60 th Anniversary recently. ASPBAE has regularly participated in RCAP\, and serves on its Steering Committee. ASPBAE steadfastly “protects and defends the right of all to inclusive\, gender-transformative and climate-saving education”. \nC. Outside the RCAP Conference Room on the 18 th Floor of University Building 19 there will be an Exhibition space\, and participants are welcome to bring posters and \ndocumentation that illustrates their organization’s work. The displays can be set up \nduring the morning of Thursday April 25 and removed in the afternoon of Friday \nApril 26. \nD.
