SUMMARY:Informal interactive dialogue on commodity markets
DESCRIPTION:EVENT:  Informal interactive dialogue on commodity markets \nDATE:  Friday\, 26 April 2024\, 10 a.m. \nVENUE:  Trusteeship Council Chamber\, UN Headquarters\, New York \n  \nIn line with General Assembly resolution 78/138\, the President of the General Assembly for its seventy-eighth session will convene a one-day informal interactive dialogue “to review world commodity trends and prospects and possible strategies for economic and export diversification\, as well as value addition for sustainable development\, particularly in commodity-dependent developing countries\, with the aim of sharing experiences and lessons learned.” \n  \nObjective \nThe event will discuss the persistence of commodity dependence\, examine the emerging concept of a modern-day commodity dependence trap that hinders diversification in developing countries\, and discuss possible pathways for countries to diversify into higher value-added activities and implement a sustainable structural transformation. The event will spotlight the critical role of economic diversification for developing countries to move out of commodity dependence and accelerate their progress towards sustainable development. \nThe event also marks 60 years of discussion on the relationship between commodities trade and development in the context of UNCTAD. \n  \nFormat \nThe event will consist of an opening segment\, two interactive panels\, and a closing segment. In addition to Member States and Observers of the General Assembly\, the meeting will be open to the United Nations system and relevant stakeholders. \nThe following are the two interactive panels: \n  \nInteractive Panel 1: Is there a modern-day commodity dependence trap? \nThis panel will examine the persistence of a state of commodity dependence in developing countries and explore the following guiding questions: \n\nIs there a modern-day commodity dependence trap? What are its elements\, characteristics\, and mechanisms?\nWhat shape does such a trap take in today’s economic environment?\nHow can new developments\, such as the increasing demand for CETM and challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events\, reshape a commodity dependence trap in the twenty-first century?\nWhat collective action can be taken by Member States?\n\nInteractive Panel 2: Economic diversification to reduce dependence and increase the resilience of commodity-dependent developing countries. \nThis panel presents an opportunity for Member States to share their perspectives on ways to deliver urgent economic diversification of commodity-dependent developing countries to reduce their dependence and increase resilience. Some guiding questions for discussion include: \n\nWhat are the emerging challenges and prospects for commodity-dependent developing countries to implement a successful diversification strategy?\nWhat specific strategies can these countries adopt to enhance their technological capacity and innovation ecosystems for diversification?\nWhat are the key sectors or industries that offer the greatest potential for driving structural transformation and resilience in commodity-dependent developing countries?\nWhat innovative financing mechanisms can support the diversification efforts of commodity-dependent developing countries?\nHow can international financial institutions and development banks play a role in providing the necessary capital for diversification projects?\nHow can Member States and stakeholders support sustainable and inclusive diversification of these countries?\n\n  \nOutcome \nThe outcome of the interactive dialogue will be a President’s summary to be circulated to all Member States and Observers\, the United Nations System\, and other stakeholders. \nNGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC are invited to submit their Expression of Interest at: https://indico.un.org/event/1011312/ Statements must be limited to 2 minutes per person\, to be delivered at the Informal interactive dialogue on commodity markets on 26 April 2024. \n* Deadline: The deadline for submission of your statement is 22 April 2024 by 5:00 pm\, Eastern Time.  Final selection of the statements will be made by the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly. Selected NGOs will be notified by email before the event. \nThe event is open to representatives of NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC with active UN grounds passes.

SUMMARY:CONFERENCE OF NGOs IN CONSULTATIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED NATIONS (CoNGO) Regional Committee in Asia-Pacific (RCAP)
DESCRIPTION:CONFERENCE OF NGOs IN CONSULTATIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED NATIONS (CoNGO) Regional Committee in Asia-Pacific (RCAP)\n  \nBangkok\, Thailand – April 25-26\, 2024\n  \nNotification and Invitation to RCAP 2024 Addressed to NGOs/CSOs in the Asia-Pacific Region \n  \nA. CoNGO has organized an RCAP Session each of the past six years generously hosted by Siam University\, Bangkok\, thanks to the hospitality of SU President Dr Pornchai Mongkhonvanit. During the Covid Pandemic\, the event was held online to widen the sphere of participation for those unable to travel. RCAP provides an opportunity to strengthen regional solidarity and understanding\, to exchange experience in crucial Sustainable Development and related areas\, and to create new and invigorating partnerships. \nB. RCAP is always held during the week of the Plenary Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to encourage attendance at both events. RCAP meets on the last days of ESCAP\, when the main debates are over and the plenary is mostly engaged in adopting concluding resolutions. This year the ESCAP Plenary is scheduled a month earlier than usual\, namely April 22-26\, so RCAP will meet at Siam University on Thursday April 25 and Friday April 26. (See programme) \nC. RCAP has two main features. The first is an analysis of regional\, national or local implementation by Asia-Pacific NGOs/CSOs of the Sustainable Development Goals that are up for review this year at the UN High Level Political Forum (UN.HQ\, July 8-17). This year the HLPF focusses on SDGs 1\, 2\, 3\, 16\, 17\, and its overall theme is “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable\, resilient and innovative solutions.” \nCoNGO hereby invites Asia-Pacific NGOs/CSOs to submit a report (4-8 pages) on their implementation activities for all or some of the five SDGs mentioned. Please focus on illustrating\, by on-the-ground examples\, the second half of the long UN title\, namely the EFFECTIVE DELIVERY OF SUSTAINABLE\, RESILIENT AND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS. Please send each report to firstvp@ngocongo.org by April 7 2024. \nD. The second feature of RCAP 2024 will again be an Open International Panel\, this year on the subject: \n“AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND YET REAL – FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT \nAND HUMANITY”. \nThe themes will be: \n– AI: HUMAN RIGHTS AND ETHICAL DIMENSIONS \n– AI AND DIGITAL JUSTICE (Access and technology) \n– REGIONAL ASIA-PACIFIC AI RESEARCH SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE \nDEVELOPMENT \nWe invite Asia-Pacific NGO/CSO with expertise in these areas to propose the name \nand qualifications of a speaker. Please send such proposals with supporting \ndocumentation to firstvp@ngocongo.org by April 7 2024. \nE. Please consult the attached programme and logistical information\, as well as \nregistration information. We greatly look forward to welcoming once again many \nAsia-Pacific NGOs and CSOs to Bangkok in April. \nCyril Ritchie\nCoNGO First Vice President\nfirstvp@ngocongo.org \n  \nProgramme\, Logistical Information\, Registration \nVenue: Siam University\, 38 Petkasem Road\, Phasicharoen\, Bangkok \nUniversity Building 19\, 18 th Floor\, Telephone +66(0)2867.8088 \n  \nTHURSDAY April 25 (First Session) \n11.00 – 12.30   Registration and Set up of exhibits \n12.30   Lunch \n15.00 – 18.00 \nOpening with musical performance\, courtesy of Siam University \nWelcome by Pornchai Mongkhonvanit\, President of Siam University \nOpening Statement by Cyril Ritchie\, CoNGO First Vice President \nPresentations of Asia-Pacific NGOs/CSOs actions on implementing the SDGs: \n“Effective delivery of sustainable\, resilient and innovative solutions” \nDiscussion and analysis \n18.00-19.00   Reception \nFRIDAY April 26 (Second and Third Sessions) \n09.00   CoNGO Presidential Statement by Liberato Bautista\, via Zoom from the USA \n09.30 – 12.15 \nOpen International Panel: “AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND YET REAL – FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND HUMANITY” \nThemes: \n\nAI: HUMAN RIGHTS AND ETHICAL DIMENSIONS\nAI AND DIGITAL JUSTICE\nREGIONAL ASIA-PACIFIC AI RESEARCH SUPPORTING\nSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT\n\n12.30 Lunch \n14.00 – 16.30 \nFurther discussion and analysis of SDG implementation: cross-cutting issues; \nmutual support; partnerships; relationship to UN.ESCAP\, to the HLPF\, and to \nthe UN Summit of the Future (UN.HQ\, September 22-23\, 2024) \nConcluding statement by the President of Siam University \nConcluding statement by the CoNGO First Vice President \n17.00   Closed meeting of the RCAP Steering Committee \nGeneral and practical information \nA. Most of you will know that at the July 2024 HLPF the following Asia-Pacific countries will offer Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs): Laos\, Micronesia\, Nepal\, Palau\, Samoa\, Solomon Islands\, and Vanuatu. CoNGO has consistently advocated that national NGOs be involved by each government in the preparation of its VNR. \nB. At RCAP 2024 we shall offer congratulations to the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE) which celebrated its 60 th Anniversary recently. ASPBAE has regularly participated in RCAP\, and serves on its Steering Committee. ASPBAE steadfastly “protects and defends the right of all to inclusive\, gender-transformative and climate-saving education”. \nC. Outside the RCAP Conference Room on the 18 th Floor of University Building 19 there will be an Exhibition space\, and participants are welcome to bring posters and \ndocumentation that illustrates their organization’s work. The displays can be set up \nduring the morning of Thursday April 25 and removed in the afternoon of Friday \nApril 26. \nD. SUMMARY:Organizational Meeting: CoNGO Working Group on Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:Liberato Bautista\, the President of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO) \ninvites you to the \nORGANIZATIONAL MEETING OF A \nCoNGO WORKING GROUP ON DECOLONIZATION \nThe Working Group on Decolonization will form part of the substantive committee called the NGO Committee to End Slavery\, Colonialism\, Racism\, and All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance. The Committee and the Working Group will be organized according to the Rules of CoNGO concerning substantive committees. \nNGOs in consultative (ECOSOC)\, associated (DGC)\, observer (other UN System entities)\, and other groups working on these concerns are invited to attend. \nAPRIL 18\, 2024 | THURSDAY | 1:15 PM – 2:45 PM ET New York | HYBRID \nVenue: Church Center for the United Nations | Suite 7C | 777 United Nations Plaza\, New York\, New York \nROOM SPACE IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 20 PERSONS WHO SHOW UP AT THE VENUE. \nPlease be sure to RSVP FOR IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE.  \nLiberato Bautista at president@ngocongo.org \n  \nZOOM LINK FOR ONLINE PARTICIPATION: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/88641491381?pwd=sGZYXbUPcFgoZqSeoCllgwzHa8Ac0N.1 \nMeeting ID: 886 4149 1381\nPasscode: 689336 \n________________________________________ \nWORKING DRAFT \nPurpose of the Working Group on Decolonization \nThe purpose of the Decolonization Working Group is to promote and facilitate the end of all forms of colonialism that are still present and active in the world today. \nIn 1946\, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 1514 (XV)\, also known as the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. The Declaration stated that all peoples have the right to self-determination and that immediate steps should be taken to end colonialism unconditionally. \nThe General Assembly created a list of Non-Self-Governing Territories and a mechanism to assist colonial and occupied nations to choose their future form of governance freely. Of the hundred or so on the original list of NSGTs\, roughly 80% have gained independence and membership in the United Nations. Today\, 17 nations remain on the Non-Self-Governing Territories’ list\, but dozens more peoples and nations are not on the list\, working to exercise their right to self-determination. \nIn 1990\, 2000\, 2010\, and 2020 (A/RES/75/123)\, the United Nations General Assembly issued resolutions declaring each time “the decade for the eradication of colonialism.” Yet\, no new state has emerged from the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories since 1986. Tragically\, the UN’s decolonization mechanisms have been virtually unproductive for forty years\, leaving the only means to self-determination and independence: 1) violent armed conflict\, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths\, injuries\, and destruction; and 2) the breakup of larger states (such as the Soviet Union). \nIn 2021\, the UN Human Rights Council passed A/48/7\, “The Negative Legacies of Colonialism on the Enjoyment of Human Rights\,” calling on all United Nations agencies to renew their efforts to end all forms of colonialism. \nThe Decolonization Working Group’s primary activity will be to assist the United Nations in implementing its commitments as expressed by UNGA Resolution 1514 (XV)\, A/RES/75/123\, and A/RES/48/7. \n

SUMMARY:XXIII INFOPOVERTY WORLD CONFERENCE "A.I. turmoil digital processes: how to act to ensure human rights and provide e-welfare for all?"
DESCRIPTION:April 12\, 2023 \nUN Headquarters\, New York – online\nLive streamed on UN Webcast \n  \nPRESENTATION \nAmidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the harrowing realities of ongoing wars\, a new\nperception of Society has surfaced. This newfound awareness has been further altered by the advent of AI\, fundamentally reshaping our outlook on the imminent future\, amplifying concerns and uncertainties surrounding a digitally dominated world. \nOperating since the dawn of the digital revolution\, the Infopoverty World Conference has punctually chronicled the pivotal junctures of this era. Its focus remains on spotlighting commendable projects and practices that merit the attention of the United Nations system\, under whose auspices it was established\, with the mission of promoting the achievement of the MDGs and SDGs through the strategic utilization of ICTs and new technologies.\nA fresh chapter is unfolding\, propelled by a cohort of digital natives and the pervasive integration of new technologies shaping the very essence of progress. Within this landscape\, tackling the diverse array of new and sometimes unethical occurrences—largely driven by private entities wielding control over infrastructure and operational platforms—has ascended to paramount significance. Delaying the resolution of these issues is no longer tenable. \nThe proclaimed SDGs have paved the way for development as a guiding compass. Now\, substantial technical\, social\, political\, and economic endeavors are imperative\, especially directed towards marginalized communities\, to allocate significant resources into AI-driven e-services to surmount the deficiencies and challenges in telecommunication infrastructure\, e-learning\, food security\, telemedicine\, and e-governance. ICTs and AI stand as viable and potent solutions to contemporary challenges\, provided they are ethically tested and applied to address the essential requirements of people. This\, in turn\, mandates their integration into foundational global action plans and policies. \nHow should we steer the impetus of AI to orient it towards overcoming of inequalities\, climate emergencies\, and challenging instances? \nHow to address the paradoxical binomial between digital excellence and its diverted\nuse\, it being at the basis of a struggling achievement of the SDGs putting the protection of human rights on the back burner? \nHow to attest that ICTs and AI serve as effective responses to contemporary\nchallenges only if they undergo ethical examination and prone to human needs? \n\nOn these premises\, drawing from the results elaborated in the past Final Declarations\, addressing the topic “AI turmoils digital processes: how to act to ensure human rights and provide e-welfare for all?”\, the 23rd Infopoverty World Conference will convene as a think-tank\, gathering distinguished experts to showcase pioneering projects aimed at achieving the UN 2030 Agenda and beyond. \nTo do so\, the conference will first draft the map of asynchronism to draw knowledge-sharing policies allowing economic\, political and technological fences to be overcome\, to later focus on e-welfare4all and the critical gaps to be covered to attain it\, namely food-security\, health and education to launch an appeal for investments on best practices to lead the transition towards an ethical\, sustainable and SDGs inspired digital Society leaving no one behind. \n  \nProgramme \nRead the Presentation \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reframing the Global LGBTQ+ Narrative: Family\, Tradition\, and Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:The NGO Committee on Human Rights \n\nPresents: \n  \nReframing the Global LGBTQ+ Narrative; Family\, Tradition\, and Spirituality \n\nTime and location: \n\nTuesday\, April 9th\, 2024 from 1 pm to 3 pm. \n\n            11th floor Church Center (East 44th St. and 1st Avenue) \n  \nPlease use this link to reserve a spot: \nhttps://forms.gle/baarLmvL6raPVTf56 \n  \n  \nConcept Note \n  \nResisting and countering harmful narratives and celebrating the integral role of LGBTQ+ people in society. \n  \nWhile there have been many advances toward the expansion and protection of the rights of the rights of sexual orientation/gender identity human rights since the June 1969 Stonewall uprising/resistance  We are now witnessing troubling regression in the progress toward equality. Anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed in Uganda and Ghana and new ones are pending in Kenya and Zambia. According to Human Rights Watch\, at least 67 countries have national laws criminalizing consensual relations between same-sex adults\, and at least nine countries have laws criminalizing the expression of gender identity that does not align with the individual’s assigned sex at birth. \n  \nIn the United States\, for example\, at least 520 laws that violate sexual orientation/gender identity human rights were introduced in state legislatures in 2023\, of which 70 were enacted\, according to the Human Rights Campaign. In 2023\, the Ugandan government enacted a series of laws that criminalize same-sex relations with punishment up to and including the death penalty. In 2022\, “LGBT propaganda” became illegal in Russia\, prohibiting the expression of LGBTQ identity in any public medium. \n  \nThese discriminatory and dangerous policies are actively harming the LGBTQ community\, and represent a troubling regression in progress that has been made toward equal protection. Our panel of speakers will share their experiences working to combat anti-LGBTQ+ forces. We invite you to join in this fight for full equality. \n  \n  \nProgram: \n\nWelcome\, and introduction; \n  \nDr. Bobbi Nassar \nCo-Chair NGO Committee on Human Rights \nInternational Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers \n\nPanelists: \n\nMr. Bruce Knotts \nCo-Chair NGO Committee on Human Rights \nChair of the NGO Committee on Disarmament\, Peace\, and Security \nWorld Federalist Movement \n\nPresentation: \nHistory of the LGBT Struggles in the United States \n\nMr. Edafe Okporo \nExecutive Director of Refuge America \n\nPresentation: \nA global gay rights activist he founded Refuge America as a welcoming place for displaced LGBTQ people.
