SUMMARY:Highlighting Interfaith Responses to Climate Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, within the United States alone\, over 47 million people expressed living with a mental health condition\, a 1.5 million increase from the previous year’s State of Mental Health Report. The confluence of crises – from conflict to economic instability to climate change – have spread a sense of fear\, anxiety and loss of hope in many people’s lives. Faith based organizations have traditionally played a key role in maintaining a sense of community\, hope\, and trust\, however\, may require retooling to address the magnitude of the challenge at hand. \nAdditionally\, in 2021’s Next Generation Climate Survey\, 83% of Generation Z reported concern about their future\, in relation to climate change. Simultaneously\, their ability to impact policies related to climate actions is limited by their resources\, time\, expertise and existing commitments to their education\, development and mental-wellbeing. DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, within the United States alone\, over 47 million people expressed living with a mental health condition\, a 1.5 million increase from the previous year’s State of Mental Health Report. The confluence of crises – from conflict to economic instability to climate change – have spread a sense of fear\, anxiety and loss of hope in many people’s lives. Faith based organizations have traditionally played a key role in maintaining a sense of community\, hope\, and trust\, however\, may require retooling to address the magnitude of the challenge at hand. \nAdditionally\, in 2021’s Next Generation Climate Survey\, 83% of Generation Z reported concern about their future\, in relation to climate change. Simultaneously\, their ability to impact policies related to climate actions is limited by their resources\, time\, expertise and existing commitments to their education\, development and mental-wellbeing. Since 2000\, the Foundation has been bestowing the ‘Gwangju Prize for Human Rights’ to individuals\, groups\, and institutions in Korea and abroad that have contributed to promoting and advancing human rights\, democracy\, and peace in their work. \nSPGPHR is for an individual or an organization that has contributed to the promotion of democracy and human rights through cultural activities\, journalism\, and academic fields. \nThese prizes are awarded by the citizens of Gwangju in the spirit of solidarity and gratitude to those who have helped them in their struggle for democratization and their search for truth. It is hoped that through this award\, the spirit and message of May 18 will be immortalized in the hearts and minds of humankind. \n2. Qualified Nominators \nA nomination for the GPHR can be submitted by any individual or organization who meets the nomination criteria. Any nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by a person or an organization that falls within one of the following categories: \na. Individuals or organizations who won the May 18 Citizens Award and/or YunSang-won Award \nb. Laureates of Gwangju Prize for Human Rights \nc. Organizations in Korea or overseas working for human rights\, peace\, and the reunification of Korea that have been active for three years or more and that the May 18 Memorial Foundation Directorate decides to request their nomination \nd. Any individual or organization in Korea or overseas that agrees on the purpose of the GPHR \n3. Candidacy Criteria \nThe candidates eligible for the GPHR are those persons or organizations nominated by a qualified individual or a qualified organization. A nomination of oneself will not be taken into consideration. \n4. Selection of the GPHR and SPGPHR \nThe May 18 Memorial Foundation is responsible for the selection of eligible candidates and the choice of the GPHR. Qualified Nominators \nA nomination for the GPHR can be submitted by any individual or organization who meets the nomination criteria. Any nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by a person or an organization that falls within one of the following categories: \na. Individuals or organizations who won the May 18 Citizens Award and/or YunSang-won Award \nb. Laureates of Gwangju Prize for Human Rights \nc. Organizations in Korea or overseas working for human rights\, peace\, and the reunification of Korea that have been active for three years or more and that the May 18 Memorial Foundation Directorate decides to request their nomination \nd. Any individual or organization in Korea or overseas that agrees on the purpose of the GPHR \n3. Candidacy Criteria \nThe candidates eligible for the GPHR are those persons or organizations nominated by a qualified individual or a qualified organization. A nomination of oneself will not be taken into consideration. \n4. Selection of the GPHR and SPGPHR \nThe May 18 Memorial Foundation is responsible for the selection of eligible candidates and the choice of the GPHR. The selection committee is composed of seven members who are designated by the May 18 Memorial Foundation’s Articles of Association. The rest of the procedure will abide by the Articles of Association. \n5. DESCRIPTION:Attention dear NGO partners: \nThe Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) will hold consultations with organizations in consultative status with ECOSOC to discuss questions of interest to the Committee or to the organizations relating to the relationship between the NGOs and the United Nations in line with paragraph 61 (a) of ECOSOC resolution 1996/31. DESCRIPTION:Attention dear NGO partners: \nThe Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) will hold consultations with organizations in consultative status with ECOSOC to discuss questions of interest to the Committee or to the organizations relating to the relationship between the NGOs and the United Nations in line with paragraph 61 (a) of ECOSOC resolution 1996/31. The consultations will take the form of written submissions and an interactive hearing which will be held in New York on 9 December 2022 from 10:00am – 1:00pm. \nAs part of the consultation process\, all NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC are invited to submit their contributions and views on four key questions in the Concept Note ahead of the hearing via these instructions. \nInstructions for submission of of Written Inputs: \n\nUse the name of your organization as the document’s name.\nThe written submission should address the four questions outlined in the Concept Note.\nYour submission to each question should not exceed 500 words.\nTo submit your written inputs\, Log in to your NGO profile and under the “Correspondence tab” click on “New Message.” Attach the document to the email\, and use “2022 Consultations with NGOs in consultative status-Written Submissions” as the email title/subject\, and “Event/Meeting” as the category.\nPlease note that we are not able to accept other formats such as PDF\,  jpeg\, etc.\nPress “send.” Please note that your submission is final; you will not be able to edit your statement submission or send multiple versions.\nKindly ensure that your written submission is finalized prior to sending the document.\n\nInstructions on registering for participation at the Interactive Hearing will be made available in the coming weeks. \nYour contribution is important! I am sending this message to  members of NGOs listed as members of CoNGO (Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations) and/or members of related NGO committees.\n\nBy now\, if your NGO is in consultative status with ECOSOC\, you or someone in your organization would have received the email below which was sent by the NGO Branch of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). If you have not read the email\, I encourage you to do so now\, including the Concept Note available here.\n\nIn response to this UN DESA email–calling on NGOs to send written submissions in preparation for a December 2022 consultation between NGOs and the ECOSOC Committee on NGOs–CoNGO invites CoNGO members to an Open Mic to talk about the questions raised in the concept note.\n\nThis Open Mic will help CoNGO prepare its written submission\, the deadline of which is August 31.
