SUMMARY:International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief
DESCRIPTION:“Violence in the Name of Faith? Hearing from Victims\, Calling for Action; on the UN Day Commemorating Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief” \nInternational Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief \n21August\, 2025 | 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. \nBaha’i International Center\, 866 United Nations Plaza\, 1st Floor \nThe NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief (New York) \n  \nIn Person Registration (ID will be required for entrance) \nLink to join register: https://forms.gle/jVzxQcs7iS3wEmZV7 \n\nConcept Note \nBackground: \nEnshrined in articles 18\, 19\, and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are the freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly\, and the right to freedom of association – four interdependent\, interrelated\, and mutually reinforcing human rights that would seem self-evident to most observers. \nHowever\, there continues to be acts of intolerance and violence based on religion or belief against individuals\, including against persons belonging to religious communities and religious minorities around the world. Not only that\, but the number and intensity of such incidents are increasing. In 2019\, as a way of condemning continuing violence and acts of terrorism targeting individuals\, including persons belonging to religious minorities\, on the basis of or in the name of religion or belief\, the UN General Assembly created the “International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.” \nBy proclaiming an International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief\, the General Assembly recalled that States have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights\, including the human rights of persons belonging to religious minorities\, including their right to exercise their religion or belief freely. \nDiscussion: \nThis event will be focused not just on honoring the day\, but on charting a path forward. First\, we will hear from victims of religious persecution\, who will not only share their stories\, but will make recommendations for a path forward towards a world where such injustice does not exist. Second\, we will hear from experts who will discuss future threats of religious persecution with the rise of new technologies\, and what we might be able to do to prevent and counteract such threats. \nSpeakers: \nSucharita Cole\, a human rights activist and survivor of religiously motivated and gender-based violence in Manipur\, India \nBani Dugal\, a member of the Baha’i community who might be able to address the current situation in Iran\, and possible implications on that situation due to the recent violence in Iran. \nBobbi Nassar with Tibetan guests \nFormat: \nIntroductory remarks from moderator (5 minutes) Scott Stearman \nPanel Presentation (30 minutes) \nQ&A (15 minutes) \nModerated discussion on the question of countering hate speech as a means to undermining violence based on religion or belief (10 minutes) \nPresentation on work of the International Religious Roundtable and the current advocacy around the appointment of the US International Religious Freedom Ambassador Anna Sineva

SUMMARY:United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2025 From Resolution to Convention: Uniting for the Rights of Older Persons
DESCRIPTION:IDOP 2025 takes place at a pivotal time\, following the recent UN Human Rights Council resolution to begin drafting a new international convention on the rights of older persons. This year’s commemoration highlights the need for a legally binding instrument that reflects the lived realities of older persons worldwide. It calls on governments\, UN agencies\, civil society\, and national institutions to engage meaningfully in this process\, while reaffirming the status of older persons as rights-holders and active members of society. IDOP 2025 also promotes intergenerational dialogue and coordinated action at all levels to ensure ageing is recognized as a shared human experience-and a global priority. \nSimultaneous interpretation into French will be available in the room only. Please note that no interpretation will be provided for online participants. \nConcept note and Program \nRegister here to participate in person \nRegister here to participate online

Under the theme “Seizing the Moment: The African State and Its Promise\,” the conference brings together leading African thinkers and changemakers for a forward-looking dialogue on governance\, development\, and Africa’s policy future. \n  \nThis year’s programme dedicates significant time to open\, interactive dialogue and interventions from the floor\, ensuring a wide diversity of voices helps drive the the conversation. Civil society and academia are two essential halves of Africa’s knowledge ecosystem\, and their exchange is key to challenging outdated narratives and elevating perspectives rooted in African realities.  We warmly welcome your engagement in shaping the recommendations that can help guide the UN’s ongoing work on Africa. \n  \nConference Programme [All Sessions Held 10:00am to 1:00pm\, Conference Rm 2\, UNHQ] \nMonday\, 1 December: “The State of the State in Africa: Presence\, Perception\, and Performance in a Changing World” \nDiscussion will examine the historical and structural roots of State absence in Africa and its far-reaching consequences for peace\, security\, and development.
