SUMMARY:Language Services and the European Union Special Briefing
DESCRIPTION:**Call for Participation**\n\nLanguage Services and the European Union\nSpecial Briefing\n\n \n8 May 2024\n\n\n\nThe NGO Committee on Language and Languages will hold a special briefing on language services and the European Union on 8 May 2024.\n\nWith twenty-four official languages\, the European Union (EU) is rich in linguistic and cultural diversity.  Implementing multilingualism in the day-to-day work of EU institutions requires robust language services for interpretation and translation.  This special briefing addresses the administration of these services (e.g.\, how they are funded; how resources\, time\, and workload are allocated; and how it is staffed) as well as practical considerations for implementing language services for highly multilingual intergovernmental work.  Focusing specifically on the European Parliament\, officials from the Directorate General for Logistics and Interpretation for Conferences and the Directorate General for Translation will discuss the provision of high-quality interpretation in meetings\, training and succession planning that ensures sustainable and flexible service\, managing interpretation processes\, and strategic planning that transforms top-level vision into act on.\n\n\nFormat\nThe meeting will take place on 8 May 2024 from 09:00-10:00 EDT/New York via Zoom.  It is anticipated that interpreting will be provided in English\, French\, and Spanish.  Statements will be made by\n\nAlison Graves\nDirector\, Directorate General for Logistics and Interpretation for Conferences\nEuropean Parliament \nMads Nyegaard Outzen\nHead\, Strategy and Innovation Unit Directorate General for Translation\nEuropean Parliament\n\nOpen discussion following the statements will be moderated by Professor Francis M. Hult\, Chair of the NGO Committee on Language and Languages.\n\n\nRegistration\nRepresentatives of NGOs\, UN Secretariat and agency staff\, EU staff\, colleagues from Member States\, scholars\, language professionals\, and others interested in multilingual services are invited to register for the briefing using this general registration form no later than 7 May.

SUMMARY:2024 UN Civil Society Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi.\nThe United Nations Civil Society Conference is the premier event on the civil society calendar at the United Nations. The Conference offers civil society organizations an opportunity to put a global perspective on a specific issue and brings together senior UN System officials\, prominent international civil society organizations\, youth changemakers\, academia\, public opinion makers\, and international media to discuss issues of global concern. This international forum\, expected to host some 1500 participants\, will provide preliminary discussions and data ahead of the Summit of the Future in September 2024 at the UN Headquarters in New York. \nSince 1947\, sixty-eight civil society conferences have resulted in successful outcomes due to previous interactions with civil society organizations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Civil society organizations were present in San Francisco at the founding of the United Nations and have been an integral part of the United Nations ecosystem from the outset. As part of our consultations\, civil society has called for better engagement with the United Nations system. I believe that it is essential for the United Nations to listen to\, coordinate with\, and engage with civil society.” \nOur Common Agenda. Chapter V. Paragraph 121 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Language Rights for  Peace\, Justice and Strong Institutions
DESCRIPTION:The Study Group on Language and the United Nations presents\nLanguage Rights for\nPeace\, Justice and Strong Institutions\nA Virtual Symposium on 10-11 June 2024\n  \nMultilingualism is a core value of the United Nations.  Yet it is rarely addressed in relation to the targets and indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals. Recent milestones call attention to the relevance of multilingualism and language rights. The 30th anniversary of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic\, Religious and Linguistic Minorities was commemorated in 2022.  The launch of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages also in 2022 brought renewed attention to the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).  In addition\, the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights was celebrated in 2023. Each of these instruments\, among others (e.g.\, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights [ICCPR]) have in common attention to language rights\, including nondiscrimination with regard to language.  The Declaration on Minorities\, UNDRIP\, and ICCPR\, in turn\, variously enshrine the rights to language in settings such as education\, media\, and jurisprudence as well as the right to participate in all domains of society\, including decision-making and political processes. \nThis two-day virtual symposium draws attention to the essential role that multilingualism must play in initiatives by the United Nations\, Member States\, non-governmental organizations\, the private sector\, and other stakeholders to foster peace\, justice and strong institutions.  Language mediates all human experience.  Fully inclusive dialogue\, problem-solving and justice must involve substantive use of multilingualism to ensure that people can understand one another\, access information equitably\, and participate democratically. Multilingualism is fundamental to peaceful solutions and strong institutions. In addition\, all initiatives must take linguistic minorities into account explicitly so that “nobody is left behind” due to their language background.  The symposium follows a panel format through which experts present their perspectives\, engage in dialogue with each other\, and prompt general discussion with participants. \n  \nEvent Details \nThe symposium will take place virtually over two days: \nMonday\, 10 June\n \n08:30-13:00 – New York\n14:30-19:00 – Geneva\n15:30-20:00 – Nairobi\n19:30-12:00 – Bangkok \nTuesday\, 11 June\n \n08:30-13:00 – New York\n14:30-19:00 – Geneva\n15:30-20:00 – Nairobi\n19:30-12:00 – Bangkok \n  \nA detailed programme will follow at a later time. \n  \nRegistration \nThe symposium is open to United Nations staff members\, delegates of Member States and staff members of missions\, government officials of all levels\, university researchers and students\, NGO representatives\, members of civil society\, and others with an interest in the relationship between language rights and SDG 16.  There is no cost to attend the symposium\, but preregistration is required.  Register here as soon as possible\, but no later than 9 June.\n \n  \nSymposium Sponsors \nThe symposium is hosted by the Study Group on Language and the United Nations in collaboration with the NGO Committee on Language and Languages\, a substantive committee of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO)\, and made possible by generous support and assistance from \n  \nCenter for Applied Linguistics (CAL) \n  \nEsperantic Studies Foundation (ESF) \n  \nDe Gruyter \n  \nCentre for Research and Documentation on World Language Problems (CED) \n  \nConsortium for Language Policy and Planning (CLPP) \n

SUMMARY:UNESCO Policy Dialogue on AI Governance
DESCRIPTION:Event summary \nWith the arrival of generative AI\, governments around the world have started to pay urgent attention to the risks of these increasingly powerful and ubiquitous systems\, and to develop and implement new governance frameworks. The European Union has adopted a binding horizontal framework for AI regulation with the AI Act. Other major developments include the United States’ Executive Order on AI\, the G7 Hiroshima Process\, and recent proposals by Brazil and Chile for new AI laws\, among others. National research institutions focusing on AI safety have been established in the US\, the UK\, and Japan. \nIn the context of this changing landscape and emerging challenges of implementing responsible and effective systems of AI governance\, the Social and Human Sciences Sector of UNESCO is hosting a Policy Dialogue on AI Governance\, which will include a series of events designed to address these pressing issues. This event is hosted in conjunction with a closed-door meeting by the AI Ethics Experts without Borders meeting on the 27th June. \nThe event will kick off with a session presenting the latest implementation outcomes of the UNESCO Recommendation\, followed by a launch of the first report of a major project between UNESCO and the Dutch Digital Infrastructure Authority\, funded by the European Commission – DG Reform. The event will also include the launch of a report exploring the potential impacts of AI on political life and democracy\, as well as panels on topics such as the synthetic content and the role of international development assistance in fostering AI for good. \nEvent details\n\nDate: 28th June\, 2024\nTime: 09:30 – 18:00\nVenue: UNESCO Headquarters\, 7 Place du Fontenoy\nRoom: Room IX \nRegister
