SUMMARY:Two years after the death of George Floyd: Antiracism\, #BLM and the United Nations
DESCRIPTION:As people continue to challenge the systemic racism that has devalued the lives of Black and Brown people globally\, many are asking the question: why do some of these tragic events spark a stronger call for change than others? \nFloyd’s murder also revived the concept of antiracism. The webinar will explore\, in practice\, what it means to be antiracist. MA MAIS Dr  \nDr Nadine Zwiener-Collins \nChair of Politics & Gender\, Diversity & Equality Paris Lodron University Salzburg  \nIncluding Discussion with Presenter & Participants\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGender equality is a United Nations sustainable development goal (No 5)\, a core value of the European Union\, and a target for many governments\, companies and organisations. But why is gender equality so important? Research has documented that gender equality leads to happier\, healthier\, and more democratic societies: It can help tackle the gender health gap resulting from a lack of research on conditions that predominantly affect women and the dangers of childbirth in many parts of the world. In the economic sphere\, gender equality helps boost performance\, as women’s equal participation is associated with increased profits for companies and with an increase in Gross Domestic Product. In addition\, equality in the political sphere has benefits for good governance. Not only is an equal opportunity to participate the core principle of democracy\, but equal participation and representation of women also decreases corruption and increases citizens’ satisfaction with democracy and the legitimacy of the political system. Finally\, gender equality matters for the individual: For example\, it improves family life\, and gender-equal societies consist of happier and healthier individuals. \nIn their presentation on gender equality\, Prof Zoe Lefkofridi and Dr Nadine Zwiener-Collins of the Chair of Politics & Gender\, Diversity & Equality at the University of Salzburg reflect on the importance of gender equality for different areas of society\, and highlight how gender equality benefits everyone. In the subsequent discussion\, they invite the participants to share and reflect on their own experiences\, and to join the discussion of what we can do to achieve gender equality. \nProfessor Zoe Lefkofridi\, Mag. MA MAIS Dr.\, holds the first Professorship for Gender Studies at the Paris-Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS). As Professor for Politics & Gender\, Diversity & Equality in the Department of Political Science\, her focus is research and teaching on democracy and representation\, diversity and equality. Her publications have appeared in internationally leading journals such as West European Politics\, European Union Politics and Politics & Gender. Professor Zoe Lefkofridi is also Editor-in-Chief of the Specialty Section Political Participation of the new gold open access journal Frontiers in Political Science and co-editor of the series Politics and Governance in the Smaller European Democracies (NOMOS Publications) and is an elected member of the board of the Austrian Society for Gender Research (ÖGGF). Prof. Lefkofridi holds a PhD from the University of Vienna (2009\, Political Science) and a Habilitation from the University of Salzburg (2017\, Political Science & Political Sociology) and prior to her time in Salzburg\, was a Jean Monnet and Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence and conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University\, the Austrian Academy of Sciences\, the GESIS Leibniz Institute in Cologne and the University of Vienna. \nNadine Zwiener-Collins is a postdoctoral researcher in Politics and Gender\, Diversity and Equality at the Department of Political Science at the University of Salzburg\, funded by the Land Salzburg. Her research focuses on the impact of (gender) inequalities in other areas of life\, such as the labour market and the family\, on the political behaviour and attitudes of citizens and politicians in Europe. But why is gender equality so important? Research has documented that gender equality leads to happier\, healthier\, and more democratic societies: It can help tackle the gender health gap resulting from a lack of research on conditions that predominantly affect women and the dangers of childbirth in many parts of the world. In the economic sphere\, gender equality helps boost performance\, as women’s equal participation is associated with increased profits for companies and with an increase in Gross Domestic Product. In addition\, equality in the political sphere has benefits for good governance. Not only is an equal opportunity to participate the core principle of democracy\, but equal participation and representation of women also decreases corruption and increases citizens’ satisfaction with democracy and the legitimacy of the political system. Finally\, gender equality matters for the individual: For example\, it improves family life\, and gender-equal societies consist of happier and healthier individuals. \nIn their presentation on gender equality\, Prof Zoe Lefkofridi and Dr Nadine Zwiener-Collins of the Chair of Politics & Gender\, Diversity & Equality at the University of Salzburg reflect on the importance of gender equality for different areas of society\, and highlight how gender equality benefits everyone. In the subsequent discussion\, they invite the participants to share and reflect on their own experiences\, and to join the discussion of what we can do to achieve gender equality. \nProfessor Zoe Lefkofridi\, Mag. MA MAIS Dr.\, holds the first Professorship for Gender Studies at the Paris-Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS). As Professor for Politics & Gender\, Diversity & Equality in the Department of Political Science\, her focus is research and teaching on democracy and representation\, diversity and equality. Her publications have appeared in internationally leading journals such as West European Politics\, European Union Politics and Politics & Gender. Professor Zoe Lefkofridi is also Editor-in-Chief of the Specialty Section Political Participation of the new gold open access journal Frontiers in Political Science and co-editor of the series Politics and Governance in the Smaller European Democracies (NOMOS Publications) and is an elected member of the board of the Austrian Society for Gender Research (ÖGGF). Prof. Lefkofridi holds a PhD from the University of Vienna (2009\, Political Science) and a Habilitation from the University of Salzburg (2017\, Political Science & Political Sociology) and prior to her time in Salzburg\, was a Jean Monnet and Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence and conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University\, the Austrian Academy of Sciences\, the GESIS Leibniz Institute in Cologne and the University of Vienna. \nNadine Zwiener-Collins is a postdoctoral researcher in Politics and Gender\, Diversity and Equality at the Department of Political Science at the University of Salzburg\, funded by the Land Salzburg. Her research focuses on the impact of (gender) inequalities in other areas of life\, such as the labour market and the family\, on the political behaviour and attitudes of citizens and politicians in Europe. Providing relief for millions around the world\, supporting businesses\, and protecting jobs and livelihoods\, digital finance served as a lifeline during the COVID-19 pandemic. A World Bank tally of policy responses to the pandemic finds that at least 58 governments in developing countries used digital payments to deliver COVID-19 relief\, of which 36 countries made payments into fully transactional accounts that were being used for saving beyond simply withdrawing cash. According to the GSMA\, international remittances processed via mobile money increased by 65 percent in 2020. \nProponents of digital finance highlight its strong capabilities to reduce transaction costs\, the potential of Artificial Intelligence to provide fair and equitable treatment of credit applicants\, and the scalability of cloud technology\, through the use of blockchain technology\, to allow consumers to transact remotely and seamlessly across multiple platforms. \nWhile the experience of COVID-19 has proven that digitalization can transform economies and lives\, it needs to be shaped with both its advantages and potential risks in mind in order to bring everyone into the digital age. For technology to benefit everyone\, private sector innovation must be supported by the appropriate public goods such as the public provision of foundational infrastructure\, access to electricity\, mobile and internet coverage. \nAs in the case of any disruptive technology\, without combining technological advances with sound policy measures\, digital technology cannot deliver on its potential to meaningfully advance financial inclusion for everyone\, including the more than 2 billion unbanked people globally. It should be provided universally to all people in need\, but that is far from current practice. While decent jobs\, including self-employment\, are mainly in the private economy\, meeting the qualifications for most jobs usually requires education and good health\, which are primarily public service functions. Thus\, programs to promote social protection and decent jobs entail adequate\, effective\, and fair national systems of taxation\, complemented by international assistance\, often in the form of technical assistance but also sometimes in aid-financed budget support\, as for low-income countries. \nThe experience of the pandemic laid bare inadequate systems to deliver cash transfers to compensate for the economic costs of the crisis and inadequate public health systems to deliver vaccines\, tests\, and protective equipment\, along with the very limited capacity\, especially in developing countries\, to maintain employment during the crisis-induced economic contraction. The pandemic experience requires us to think about preparing better “shock responsive” social protection and health systems and stronger counter-cyclical policies. Preparation\, in turn\, requires consideration of ways to mobilize the necessary domestic and international financial resources on an ongoing basis and with the capacity to meet the higher expenditure needs at times of crisis. \nWhile the inter-agency report concluded with 21 separate proposals\, speakers in the side event will be asked to discuss one or more of the proposals. There is no expectation that all 21 proposals would be covered\, nor is that necessary. Together with dynamic global South-based activist-intellectuals\, these four organizations have begun to outline a conceptual framework that unpacks the connections between neoliberalism\, patriarchy\, white supremacy\, and colonialism. \nWe invite you to join us as we outline a collective advocacy agenda to advance a vision for a feminist and decolonial global green new deal\, grounded in a blueprint for a feminist agenda for people and planet. This three-hour global kickoff meeting will draw connections between the emerging work of the Action Nexus and the advocacy and activism of feminist movements across the world\, particularly in the global/economic South. \nBeginning with a grounding in the conceptual framework of the Action Nexus\, this action-oriented strategy session will include breakout groups across regions and issue areas.
