SUMMARY:COP30 UNFCCC: Timelines for the selection process for a side event and/or an exhibit
DESCRIPTION:While the secretariat continues its efforts to find sufficient funding for the coordination of side events and exhibits at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP 30\, in order to save the time for required authorization and mergers of applications\, SEORS will be open in parallel so that the secretariat can immediately start the selection process if and when sufficient resources are found. The secretariat will keep observer organizations and Parties partnering with observer organizations informed of the selection process through the SEORS webpage. \nIn this context\, please note that the timelines for the selection process for a side event and/or an exhibit at COP 30 have been announced on our official webpage. As indicated on the website\, the application period will open on Wednesday\, 16 July 2025\, 10 am CEST\, and close on Monday\, 21 July 2025\, 5 pm CEST. The process would not begin or would be halted if and when resources are not sufficient. \nNotwithstanding\, as in the past\, Side Events and Exhibits Online Registration System (SEORS) will be the only channel used by the UNFCCC secretariat to receive applications for official side events and official exhibits by observer organizations\, and Parties partnering with admitted observer organizations. \nFor further information on side events and exhibits\, please consult the Side Events and Exhibits information page on the official UNFCCC website and also the Information for COP 30 Participants. In particular\, you can find side events and exhibits eligibility and selection criteria on the official UNFCCC website: \nSide events and exhibits eligibility criteria;\nSide events and exhibits selection criteria. Please take note of our updated selection criteria\, in view of the recent high number of applications and the situations where even the joint applications have to be declined and in accordance with the mandate from Parties to “continue taking administrative measures to encourage a more diverse representation of observer organizations and to consider opportunities to enhance participation of observer organizations… in particular for organizations from underrepresented regions” (FCCC/SBI/2024/13\, para. 201(d)(iii). \nNGO Constituency Focal Points are copied in this communication for information. \nKind regards\, \nObserver Relations Team \nClimate Action Engagement Unit \nCommunications and Engagement Division \n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . \n \n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .\nPlatz der Vereinten Nationen 1 \n53113 Bonn\, Germany \n \n  \n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .\nPlatz der Vereinten Nationen 1 \n53113 Bonn\, Germany \n

SUMMARY:Geopolitical Instability and the Value of Multilingualism
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n\n**Call for Participation** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Study Group on Language and the United Nations presents \nGeopolitical Instability and the Value of Multilingualism\nA Virtual Symposium on 13 June 2025 \n\nThe world is experiencing what many are calling a polycrisis precipitated by climate change\, geopolitical conflicts\, political instability\, social inequalities\, economic challenges\, misinformation\, environmental degradation\, health emergencies\, and more.  It would be easy in this time of turmoil to dismiss multilingualism as a minor concern and distraction—a luxury we cannot afford or simply a low priority until the world has other crises under control. \nYet\, it is through language that we understand our world\, create and share knowledge\, and communicate with one another.  The only way we can address the world’s current problems is through meaningful dialogue about solutions. \nIn a polycrisis\, we must seek polysolutions like multilingual communication.  Linguistic diversity brings with it a diversity of people and ideas from communities across the globe.  How can we ensure that they are all included and that no possibilities are missed or voices unheard simply because of a lack of language capacity? \nThe present symposium draws attention to the value of multilingualism for the United Nations\, Member States\, non-governmental organizations\, civil society\, the private sector\, and other stakeholders in light of the confluence of contemporary geopolitical crises.  The symposium follows a panel format through which experts present their perspectives\, engage in dialogue with each other\, and prompt general discussion with participants. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details \n\n\nThe symposium will take place virtually on 13 June 2025. \n\n\nFriday\, 13 June\n \n\n\n08:30-12:00 – New York\n14:30-18:00 – Geneva\n15:30-19:00 – Nairobi\n19:30-23:00 – Bangkok \n\n\nInterpreting will be provided in English\, French\, and Spanish.  A detailed programme is attached. \n\n\n\nRegistration \n\n\nThe symposium is open to United Nations staff members\, delegates of Member States and staff members of missions\, government officials of all levels\, university researchers and students\, NGO representatives\, members of civil society\, and others with an interest in multilingualism  There is no cost to attend the symposium\, but preregistration is required.  Register here as soon as possible\, but no later than 12 June. \n\n\nSymposium Sponsors \n\n\nThe symposium is hosted by the Study Group on Language and the United Nations in collaboration with the NGO Committee on Language and Languages\, a substantive committee of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO)\, the Esperantic Studies Foundation (ESF)\, and the Consortium for Language Policy and Planning (CLPP).
