Her work has identified that the needs for training and support\naround technology content knowledge and practice competencies is overlooked and undervalued. A model for attending to family professionals' technology competence within the\nscope of family impact will be presented\, along with research indicating the value of a supportive context to family professionals' technology acceptance and use. These inform further\npolicy for the inclusion of family professionals in the wider scope of family well-being. \nOur second speaker\, Dr. Kara Alaimo (Associate Professor of Communications at FairleighDickinson University)\, is the author of Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women\nand Girls – And How We Can Take It Back. Dr. Alaimo will discuss how parents can handle their children’s use of social media. At what age should children be allowed to use social media?\nWhat do we need to teach young people about the dangers they could face online and how to use social media in healthy ways? DESCRIPTION:Population ageing is a major global trend reshaping societies worldwide. Life expectancy at birth now exceeds 75 years in half of the world’s countries\, 25 years longer than in 1950. By 2030\, older persons are projected to outnumber youth globally\, with this increase most rapid in developing countries. This demographic shift has significantly transformed the caregiving landscape\, encompassing a wide range of needs for both paid and unpaid support in formal and informal settings. As populations age\, the demand for comprehensive healthcare\, care\, and social support services has grown substantially\, particularly for older persons with conditions such as dementia. In recognition of these challenges and opportunities\, the 34th commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons will focus on the theme of “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide“. \nThis year’s event will bring together experts to discuss policies\, legislation\, and practices that strengthen care and support systems for older persons. It will highlight the urgent need to expand training and educational opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology\, address the global shortage of care workers\, and recognize the diverse contributions of caregivers. Environmental protection is not a luxury that can be postponed until countries have\nmet their other obligations and priorities: it is an existential imperative without which humans and the planet will not survive. \nThe United Nations Summit of the Future (SOTF) held in New York September 22-23\, 2024\, brought together world leaders to forge a new international consensus on how to “deliver a better present and safeguard the future”. The outcoming Pact for the Future document is expected to demonstrate the growing global momentum towards building societies that value more than just economic output. Social progress measured in a business-as-usual\, GDP-centric view of prosperity must be replaced by new developmental models that place collective wellbeing\, ecological sustainability and intergenerational solidarity as main priorities. A strong normative framework at the national level is essential to meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations in a healthy\, clean and sustainable environment. \nFor this purpose\, development must be supported by an international economic environment that incorporates this new\, post-growth framing of the Right to Development. A deep reform of the international monetary\, tax and financial systems is thus required to adapt and respond to the complex realities of the XXI century. \nIntergenerational solidarity is embedded in the DNA of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Both the SDGs and the Pact for the Future commit member states to policies that promote equity between generations\, ensuring that resources\, opportunities\, and support systems are accessible to both Youth and Older persons. This holistic approach\, essential for implementing the SDGs\, requires at its base a clear commitment to sustainability by all member states. \nIndigenous perspectives can provide valuable insights into intergenerational solidarity\, the sustainability of development and the environment. Indigenous knowledge systems and codes emphasize a harmonious relationship with nature\, community well-being\, and respect for all generations\, aligning closely with the principles of sustainable development. By integrating these indigenous principles into the global discourse on intergenerational solidarity\, we can balance a\ndistribution of resources that supports both current and future needs\, thus enhancing our understanding of sustainable practices that honor the interconnectedness of all generations. This approach not only addresses immediate challenges but also fosters a resilient and inclusive long-term framework for achieving the SDGs\, ensuring that no one is left behind. \nBy signing this Pact of the Future member states have pledged to execute transformative policies\nto bring about urgent solutions through structural change\, with all human rights as\nits foundation\, for the preservation of people and planet. Human rights\, including civil\, political\, economic\, social and cultural rights provide the blueprint for a just\, peaceful and sustainable future for everyone everywhere. Grounded in the dignity and equality of every human being\, human rights offer solutions based on agreed standards\, principles\,\nand universal values. \nThe three United Nations pillars are of equal importance\, interlinked and mutually reinforcing. Human rights are essential for building trust in institutions\, addressing the root causes and drivers of poverty\, inequality and conflict\, and ensuring justice and reconciliation – and thus key to achieving peace and security and sustainable development. \nImplementing the Pact for the Future in a way that recognises and puts these linkages into practice will ensure a focus on key issues\, such as addressing inequalities and leaving no one behind\, and ensuring meaningful\, inclusive and safe participation. Accordingly\, it is crucial to ensure a strong human rights system that works effectively\, impartially\, and transparently across all human rights. \nPanel discussion\nThe UN Human Rights Office\, together with Costa Rica\, South Africa\, the European Union\, Action for Sustainable Development and CIVICUS\, is organizing a panel discussion to highlight the value of human rights in achieving sustainable development and peace and security\, and in ensuring the effective enjoyment by all of all human rights. This includes the right to development. The panel will showcase concrete applications of human rights as a bridge-builder between the people and the institutions of the State in a range of areas\, including addressing inequalities\, tackling discrimination\, and addressing new and emerging challenges. \nIn particular\, emphasis will be placed on how the United Nations\, Member States\, and civil society organizations\, along with all other relevant stakeholders\, can work together to implement the Pact for the Future\, with human rights at its centre. As set out in “Human Rights: A Path for Solutions\,” which built on the Human Rights 75 Initiative\, linking universal human rights to the actions and commitments set forth in the Pact will revitalize a multilateral response-based system that works effectively\, impartially\, and transparently for both people and the planet. \nObjectives:\nThrough concrete case examples and the sharing of good practices\, the panel aims to:\n• Demonstrate the importance of a strong human rights system for an inclusive and effective multilateral system that is better able to respond and deliver for the people and planet.\n• Demonstrate the critical role of human rights in achieving peace and security and sustainable development\, while reaffirming the interlinkages\, equal value and importance\nof the three United Nations pillars.\n• Strengthen buy-in\, explore innovative solutions and forge collaborative partnerships for implementation of the Pact on our path for a better future with human rights at the core.\n• Illustrate ways in which “Human Rights: A Path for Solutions” provides a key framework for this journey\, including the synergies between this vision and the actions and\ncommitments set forth in the Pact. \nFormat:  \nThe High Commissioner for Human Rights will deliver opening remarks and moderate a panel comprised of high-level representatives of the organizing coalition.\nAn interactive dialogue with interventions from registered speakers will follow.
