Human rights\, including civil\, political\, economic\, social and cultural rights provide the blueprint for a just\, peaceful and sustainable future for everyone everywhere. Grounded in the dignity and equality of every human being\, human rights offer solutions based on agreed standards\, principles\,\nand universal values. \nThe three United Nations pillars are of equal importance\, interlinked and mutually reinforcing. Human rights are essential for building trust in institutions\, addressing the root causes and drivers of poverty\, inequality and conflict\, and ensuring justice and reconciliation – and thus key to achieving peace and security and sustainable development. \nImplementing the Pact for the Future in a way that recognises and puts these linkages into practice will ensure a focus on key issues\, such as addressing inequalities and leaving no one behind\, and ensuring meaningful\, inclusive and safe participation. Accordingly\, it is crucial to ensure a strong human rights system that works effectively\, impartially\, and transparently across all human rights. \nPanel discussion\nThe UN Human Rights Office\, together with Costa Rica\, South Africa\, the European Union\, Action for Sustainable Development and CIVICUS\, is organizing a panel discussion to highlight the value of human rights in achieving sustainable development and peace and security\, and in ensuring the effective enjoyment by all of all human rights. This includes the right to development. The panel will showcase concrete applications of human rights as a bridge-builder between the people and the institutions of the State in a range of areas\, including addressing inequalities\, tackling discrimination\, and addressing new and emerging challenges. \nIn particular\, emphasis will be placed on how the United Nations\, Member States\, and civil society organizations\, along with all other relevant stakeholders\, can work together to implement the Pact for the Future\, with human rights at its centre. As set out in “Human Rights: A Path for Solutions\,” which built on the Human Rights 75 Initiative\, linking universal human rights to the actions and commitments set forth in the Pact will revitalize a multilateral response-based system that works effectively\, impartially\, and transparently for both people and the planet. \nObjectives:\nThrough concrete case examples and the sharing of good practices\, the panel aims to:\n• Demonstrate the importance of a strong human rights system for an inclusive and effective multilateral system that is better able to respond and deliver for the people and planet.\n• Demonstrate the critical role of human rights in achieving peace and security and sustainable development\, while reaffirming the interlinkages\, equal value and importance\nof the three United Nations pillars.\n• Strengthen buy-in\, explore innovative solutions and forge collaborative partnerships for implementation of the Pact on our path for a better future with human rights at the core.\n• Illustrate ways in which “Human Rights: A Path for Solutions” provides a key framework for this journey\, including the synergies between this vision and the actions and\ncommitments set forth in the Pact. \nFormat:  \nThe High Commissioner for Human Rights will deliver opening remarks and moderate a panel comprised of high-level representatives of the organizing coalition.\nAn interactive dialogue with interventions from registered speakers will follow.

DESCRIPTION:20 – 21 September 2024\nTo generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors\, the Secretary-General of the United Nations is convening the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. \nBringing together representatives from Member States\, civil society\, private sector\, academia\, local and regional authorities\, youth\, and many more\, the Action Days will provide an opportunity for broad engagement and inclusion. These stakeholders have all played a key role in shaping the Pact for the Future and will be critical to its implementation. \nThe Action Days will kick off with a dedicated\, youth-led afternoon followed by a Saturday programme which will focus on three priority themes – digital and technology\, peace and security\, and sustainable development and financing. DESCRIPTION:CAMPAIGN LAUNCH JULY 25\n5 TRILLION AS PAYMENT TOWARDS THE CLIMATE DEBT!\nCALL to ACTION & COMMUNICATIONS PACK\nThe Global North has an incalculable climate debt owed to the Global South\, stemming from their huge share of responsibility for the cumulative historical and continuing greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting climate crisis.  This climate debt is part of a larger historical\, social\, economic\, and ecological debt owed to the Global South\, arising from centuries of colonial and post-colonial exploitation and oppression. \nOn July 25\, movements and civil society organizations will launch a Campaign demanding that Global North governments pay US$5 trillion a year in public funds as a downpayment on their Climate Debt.     \nThese governments claim they do not have enough public funds to deliver on their financial obligations towards the Global South but spend trillions in fossil fuel subsidies and military infrastructure and operations.  Instead of addressing tax abuses of huge multinational corporations that are global polluters and profiteers\,  they advance global tax deals favoring the rich. At a time when public funds are desperately needed for peoples’ needs and rights\, Global North governments refuse to respond to the clamor for the cancellation of public debts in the South which they\, together with their elites and corporations\,  bear the biggest responsibility for\, and instead promote failed\, flawed and futile debt reduction measures and offer more loans.    In recent years\, the unjust and inequitable global economic and financial architecture that they perpetuate – legacies of colonialism – caused an annual net resource transfer from the South to the North in the trillions. \nThis year is a pivotal year to raise our claims for payment for Climate Debt.  In the lead-up to and during COP 29 in Baku\, Azerbaijan\, Climate Finance will be a central issue in the international climate space.   for Climate Finance. These next months will offer crucial opportunities that will either propel us toward the radical transformation needed in our social\, economic\, and political systems or doom us to further climate chaos. Delay is no longer an option – we need to unite and increase pressure on all fronts to ensure decisive action. \nJoin us in Launching this Campaign through intensive and massive digital actions on July 25 and continuing on July 26. It will seek to articulate good practices\, lessons learned about the contribution of care and support systems to ensure the wellbeing and the rights of care recipients and caregivers through coherent and gender responsive policies. It will also seek pathways for implementation of this agenda based on the ongoing efforts by Member States\, the UN System\, and relevant stakeholders and to take concrete steps towards establishing care and support systems that are human rights-based\, gender-responsive\, disability-inclusive\, and age-sensitive. \nBACKGROUND \nThe Care agenda has built important momentum over the last year\, as the General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/77/317 titled “The International Day of Care and Support”\, and the Human Rights Council adopted resolution “Centrality of care and support from a human Rights Perspective”. Sustainable Development cannot be achieved without robust and resilient care and support systems where no one is left behind. These systems are not only critical to addressing the undervaluing and gendered division of care work as a precondition for SDG 5 on gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls with benefits cutting across multiple SDGs\, including SDG 1 on Poverty\, SDG 3 on Good health and wellbeing\, SDG 4 on Quality education\, SDG 8 on Decent work and economic growth\, SDG 10 on Reduced inequalities\, SDG 11 on Sustainable cities and communities\, thus contributing to support just\, prosperous and sustainable economies. \nTHE HUMAN RIGHTS LENS OF CARE \nCare is central to meeting the physical\, psychological and emotional needs of care receivers and care providers\, thereby enhancing their rights\, dignity\, agency and wellbeing. It is also central to children’s development through the provision of sufficient\, safe and nutritious food\, to support healthy growth and development through stimulating environment and social interactions with attentive caregivers. \nCARE AND GENDER EQUALITY \nThe redistribution of the disproportionate responsibility of domestic and care work that women have historically faced is a matter of economic and social justice. Work that\, by the way\, remains invisible and undervalued in many parts of the world today. Official figures indicate this: according to the International Labor Organization (ILO)\, 16.4 billion hours a day are dedicated to unpaid care work\, which is equivalent to 11 trillion dollars or 9% of the world’s GDP. Furthermore\, the Gender Snapshot 2023 found that progress towards a fairer balance of unpaid care work has been slow and that globally women spend 2.8 more hours than men on unpaid care and domestic work. \nCARE AND THE FUTURE OF WORK \nIt is clear that more needs to be done to recognize\, reward\, and value paid care work and care workers as essential workers and adopt measures that combat gender stereotypes related to care and support\, as well as those related to\, inter alia\, race\, disability\, ethnicity\, age\, and migratory status\, to reduce occupational segregation for care work. It is also important to improve the working conditions and reduce precarious employment in paid care work. Working conditions for care workers should be improved and decent work for care workers should be promoted in accordance with international labor standards. In particular\, decent work contracts should be ensured for care and support workers in the informal and formal economy\, including migrant care and support care and support workers. Additionally\, it is key to account the value of informal care work and the need for recognition and support for unpaid family caregivers. \nADVANCING CARE AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS: THE INSTITUTIONAL OPPORTUNITY \nThis ECOSOC Special Meeting will provide a platform for member states\, UN Agencies\, and stakeholders to share best practices\, innovative policies\, and effective strategies that recognize and bolster care work as a fundamental component of social and economic development. To this end\, the UN system has mobilized efforts towards a UN Policy Paper on Transforming Care Systems in which aims to inform and harmonize UN Agency efforts on care by offering key definitions\, guiding principles\, approaches\, and policy options that can be contextualized to different socio-economic realities. It intends to amplify the impact of the UN System in advancing comprehensive care systems that enable gender equality\, well-being\, and social justice alongside sustainable development and economic transformation. \nOBJECTIVES \nIn accordance with draft resolution E/RES/2024/4\, the objective of the informal intergovernmental interactive dialogue is to: \n• Evaluate experiences\, good practices\, and main challenges concerning the promotion of and investment in care and support systems – Participants will discuss past experiences and existing practices in promoting and investing in care and support systems\, and will have an opportunity to react to the UN Policy Paper on Transforming Care Systems \n• Understand contributions of care and support systems to individuals\, families\, societies\, and economies – The discussion aims to deepen understanding of how care and support systems contribute to the well-being of individuals\, the resilience of families\, the cohesion of societies\, and the overall economic prosperity. \n• Consider caregivers’ and receivers’ roles\, and pathways to the care economy – Central to this dialogue is the recognition of the pivotal roles played by caregivers and receivers in care and support systems. \n• Discuss the potential of investing in the care and support systems to reduce women’s time and income poverty\, support women’s labor force participation\, and expand employment opportunities in the care sector. \nFORMAT \nThe meeting will be open to all delegations\, and will consist of a high-level opening\, an interactive panel discussion\, and a closing segment. The meeting will feature the participation of the President of the Economic and Social Council and high-level officials from the United Nations.
