Special Session: A Conversation with Great Minds

Scientific advances are being made in leaps and bounds. In the biotech field, the revolutionary CRISPR gene editing tool and the messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, are revolutionizing healthcare and hold the promise of changing our world for the better, with the prospects of eradicating pathogens, treating degenerative conditions, and growing more food, to name a few. But important questions arise with such ground-breaking advances. These need to be answered to inform public policy making, especially for developing countries – where many of the challenges that these technologies promise to address are prevalent.

54th session of the Commission on Population and Development

Dear NGO representatives,

In the context of the fifty-fourth session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), the co-facilitators, Ms. Cristina Popescu (Romania) and Mr. Nizar Kaddouh (Lebanon), would like to invite you to an online informal consultation with NGOs on the zero draft of the resolution on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development (attached).

The consultation will take place Thursday, 1 April 2021 from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. New York time (EDT).

Sacred People, Sacred Earth { A Faith-Climate Day of Action event}

On 11 March 2021 people of faith and conscience all around the world are kicking off organizing for the biggest-ever faith-climate day of action, all at the grassroots.

In places of prayer and households around the globe, we are joining together to call for climate leadership guided by compassion, love, and justice. In Chile alone, there are more than 15 actions taking place in Santiago and around the country. Churches are ringing their bells, and other places of prayer and meditation are sounding the alarm for action on climate change.

Our 10 Demands

  • Energy: 100% renewable, clean energy for all! Sustainable, affordable power for everyone – especially the 800 million people without access to electricity
  • Finance: Global finance aligned with compassionate values!  Increased financing – in COVID recovery and beyond – for sustainable industry, infra-structure and agriculture
  • Employment: Jobs and healthcare for all! A just transition for workers impacted by climate change through job training, living wage and universal healthcare and insurance
  • Self-Determination: Respect Indigenous Rights! A strong defense for the legal rights of Indigenous communities and all environmental protectors
  • Hospitality: Welcome for migrants! Generous opportunities for climate refugees to migrate and establish new homes
  • Restoration: No more climate pollution! Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in wealthy countries by 2030; accelerated finance/technology transfers for global net zero before 2050
  • Biodiversity: End the planet’s desecration! No new fossil fuel exploration or infrastructure, no more deforestation; no more habitat or biodiversity loss
  • Divestment: Eliminate immoral investment! No further financing or COVID bailouts for fossil fuels and exploitative agriculture
  • Reparation: Climate reparations from wealthy countries! Initiatives by wealthy countries in climate financing and technology transfer, in recognition of these countries’ colonialist and environmental debt
  • Community: Bold faith community leadership! Sustained, united action guided by the teachings of our diverse religions, ushering in an equitable, peaceful life for all.

Civil Society Forum ahead of UNECE RFSD 2021

Our yearly civil society forum ahead of UNECE’s Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (RFSD) will take place online, so we have split up our strategy meeting into two parts and an orientation session over the spacing of two days. Please note that you do need to register to all three sessions latest 7 March 2021 to receive the zoom access link. Below is an overview of the various sessions:

March 8 Agenda

Civil society will collectively focus on developing common positions which can be used to shape their collective advocacy during the official sessions of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, the peer-learning tables and side events. The second part of our strategy meeting is split into two parts, the first part is a strategic session with UN Agencies and Member States, the second part is open to civil society only and will be used to strategize around SDGs monitoring, with a focus on local, national and regional dynamics. Register here.

World Negotiation Day

Online event by UNITAR: World Negotiation Day

Upon the request of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the UNCTAD secretariat has the honour to transmit herewith the programme for the “World Negotiation Day”, organized by UNITAR and ADN Group on Tuesday, 9 March 2021.

For the second time in the history of world negotiation, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, ADN Group ​and Global Citizen Forum have come together to organise the World Negotiation Day.

During the second edition of the World Negotiation Day, talks will be given by negotiators from every horizon. Round table discussions will be held by experts in bilateral and multilateral negotiation, and Rabih El Haddad and Marwan Mery will discuss the importance of negotiation in the 21st Century.

Global warming, disarmament, resource management, 5G… Negotiation is a key player in our future and the only means we have to deal with the trials of this century, peacefully. Register here!

World Water Day

World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, focuses on the importance of freshwater.

World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

ESD for 2030 Framework and the Berlin Conference: Time to Act – Now or Never

This online workshop summarizes the learnings from the series of online workshops and highlights the focus areas of the new framework ESD for 2030, as well as its roadmap on the way forward, from UNESCO World Conference on ESD in Berlin, Germany and beyond.

Related to this series, UNESCO recently published an ESD for 2030 Roadmap, which provides guidance for Member States and other stakeholders for the implementation of the new global framework ‘Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs’ (ESD for 2030).
