THE FUTURE IS UPON US, WHAT NEXT? — CIVIL SOCIETY REFLECTIONS ON THE SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE
The Summit of the Future promised an invigorated, more responsive, and accountable multilateralism ready to address a polycrisis that imperils the present and the future if not attended to. Did the Summit of the Future rise to the challenge? The tough negotiations demonstrate how difficult it is to elaborate multilateral cooperation that musters the current to confront existential risks like climate change, global violence, and forced migration. CoNGO in Vienna invites NGO leaders to pause and reflect on the Summit of the Future and its outcome documents–the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations. NGO representatives, especially those who attended the Summit, are invited to share their thoughts and initial assessments of the Summit. How can we push the international community to realize the SDGs and go beyond into the future with the Pact’s 56 action items in mind? What kind of monitoring and follow-up should NGOs watch for and help shape to enhance the pressure on governments to implement the ambitious recommendations?
