[Virtual] Lessons from the Decolonization Era in Confronting the COVID-19 Crisis

Join members of Post-Colonialisms Today in a live event on 29 July discussing African policy responses to the COVID-19 crisis. As the impacts of the crisis are compounded by neoliberalism and colonialism, panelists will reflect on the immediate post-independence period—including initiatives of Nasser, Nkrumah, Nyerere, etc.—to draw lessons for today guided by a vision for structural transformation of the continent.

CoNGO Notes: On UN Charter Day, 26 June 2020, the President of CoNGO, Liberato Bautista, issued a presidential statement in which, among other things, he said, “The unfinished agenda of decolonization and corollary issues related to self-determination cry out for attention [at the United Nations].” CoNGO also issued on 12 May 2020, the statement “COVID-19 Recovery: Building Back Better” in which it said: “During a crisis, global cooperation and solidarity are urgently needed, but nationalism, racism, intolerance, xenophobia, and border closures have too often prevailed. Measures to fight the pandemic have led to restrictions of long-established civic rights and democratic structures. A supercentenarian yogi (lived 123 years) who blessed many around the world including diplomats at the United Nations and lived in New York City since the 1970s until 2010. Buaji was involved with numerous Inter-religious/Interfaith/peace events at the United Nations. He was one of the spiritual leaders who worked hard to create “Interfaith Harmony Week” and the “International Day of Yoga” at the United Nations.
 
Those who had a wonderful experience with him, please share a few words (short message) about him at the meeting. Please consider this as a gathering for a spiritual family to honor our elders.

This Side Event will feature Agents of Change, youth from all around the world who have led significant initiatives in response to pressing social issues,  with a focus on disarmament, nonviolent methodologies, and civil society. This event hopes to highlight and encourage youth involvement in civil society as well as provide information on how to effectively get involved in advocacy and social justice, whilst highlighting avenues for active engagement in accomplishing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Agents of Change will be joining us to share their own experiences and anecdotes on how they are personally involved in sustainable peace.

AUGUST EXPERT PANELS 

The series of online panels hosted by NVINY’s Civil Society Engagement (CSE) team will consist of 3 panels and will take place through 3 consecutive weeks, with one panel taking place each week.

  1. Nishka Malik’s panel discussion will be concerning indigenous people and mining,
  2. Parker Dolton’s will be on education initiatives in developing countries,
  3. Arielle Rosenthal’s will be on the future of humanitarian aid.

Each panel will feature 4 speakers and will be 60 to 90 minutes. The panels will take place on Zoom, and will preferably be broadcasted on Youtube and Facebook for more engagement with the audience.

We are still looking for a few more panelists and if you know anyone who would want to speak in the expert panel on one of these three topics if you could encourage them to reach out to the CSE Team lead Inci Sayki at  incisayki@nonviolenceny.org
