Dialogue on Education: Meeting New Challenges

Education at all levels faced unforeseen challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic in communities, globally impacting students and educators along with their families.  Every aspect of education adjusted to ensure inclusive quality learning continued to be experienced by students with curriculums via virtual engagement which highlighted the importance of digital connectivity for all students. Education is covered in the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals and is key to the success of the UN2030 Sustainable Development Agenda to “Leave No One Behind.” Our panel will share their reflections and innovative solutions in response to this global crisis. In addition, we will share an overview of our UN75 People’s Declaration for the UN We Need.

Our UN75 Dialogue in observance of World Cities Day: “Better City, Better Life: Valuing our Communities and Cities” will address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our communities and cities while strengthening our resilience to build back better. The World Urban Forum – WUF10 and the UN Economist Network for the UN 75th Anniversary: Shaping the Trends of Our Time Report showed us the megatrends which shape our world. The present report focuses on five of these megatrends: climate change; demographic shifts, particularly population ageing; urbanization; the emergence of digital technologies and inequalities. While many are utilizing innovative communication platforms that allow for better engagement to strengthen the resilience of their communities and cities, through the pandemic, others without access are falling further behind. It is vitally important that we continue our focus on the SDGs and the UN2030 SD Agenda to build partnerships with Member States, UN-Habitat, national and local authorities as well as stakeholders from civil society and the private sector in order to be better prepared to achieve the inclusive, safe, resilient and healthier future we want with the UN we need – to “Leave No One Behind.”

UN75 Global Health Themed Consultation

This consultation is for those who are interested in global health and want to weigh in on big questions impacting people all over the world, including, but not limited to, COVID-19.

This year, the United Nations celebrates its 75th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that the UN is hosting the world’s largest global conversation on creating the future we want by 2045, when the UN celebrates its centennial. The UN is inviting civil society, businesses, political decision-makers, youth advocates and so many others to share their thoughts on the current state of the world, and is asking us all how we can work together to improve our world so that everyone, everywhere, can live their best lives. To provide UN advocates with an opportunity to share their visions and recommendations, UNA-USA is hosting virtual state-wide UN75 consultations across the country over the next few months. UNA-USA is inviting you to participate in Pennsylvania’s virtual UN75 consultation to share your thoughts with the UN.

For these consultations, the UN is asking three major questions:
1. What kind of future do we want to create?
2. Are we on track to secure a better world?
3. What action is needed to help us achieve a brighter future?

Following each of these consultations, a report will be submitted to the UN to share advocates’ recommendations to help shape the UN’s priorities for the future.

World Refugee Day: Every Action Counts

In recognition of World Refugee Day and in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, this event will feature stories from a variety of perspectives within the refugee realm.

Bear witness to the daily struggle of refugees from a UNHCR field worker; be inspired by a refugee resettled in the United States where s/he joined the fight against COVID-19 in his/her new community; and hear from Chris Boian, UNHCR spokesperson, who can offer additional glimpses of the work to provide dignity, hope, and new beginnings to refugees around the world. Audience members will have the opportunity to pose questions to each of the storytellers during a question and answer session.
