United Nations International Day of Older Persons (IDOP2022)–Commemoration in Vienna

In 1990, the United Nations’ General Assembly voted to establish October 1st as the International Day of Older Persons [IDOP] (GA Res. 45/106). Each year, the Vienna-based NGO Committee on Ageing organises a commemoration event in early October.
This year’s Vienna event will be celebrated in the afternoon of Monday, 3 October 2022 starting at 13:30, in the main hall of the ÖJAB-Haus (Untere Augartenstrasse 31, 1020 Wien).
The UN-wide general theme of the upcoming IDOP commemoration is “The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women”. You and your colleagues may also register to attend in person. However, those wishing to attend via online are kindly asked to register via this Zoom link.
The event starts at 13:30 hours and finishes at 16:00 hours, after which refreshments will be served. There is an opportunity to follow the parallel IDOP event at UN headquarters which starts at 10:00 hours New York time (16:00 hours Vienna time) via a large TV screen at the OJAB-Haus.

Focused discussion on identifying ways and means of more meaningful engagement of youth in the work of the General Assembly

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his report entitled “Our Common Agenda” (A/75/982), calls for a renewal of solidarity across generations, particularly with younger generations, and puts forward a number of concrete recommendations to further that objective.

Paragraph 47 of the report includes a proposal recommending that the “Envoy on Youth will prepare recommendations for more meaningful, diverse and effective youth engagement in UN deliberative and decision-making processes for the consideration of the General Assembly, the Security Council and ECOSOC and their respective subsidiary bodies. This will be done in consultation with the world’s young people.”

The SG’s Envoy on Youth has been invited to provide recommendations on youth engagement in the UN processes for consideration by Member States, and a focused discussion during the seventy-sixth session of the General Assembly on identifying ways and means of engagement of youth in the work of the General Assembly convened by the PGA has been announced.

The focused discussion will serve as a platform for Member States and relevant partners, in line with resolution 76/6, to share views on youth engagement vis-à-vis the work of the General Assembly. The meeting on 30 August 2022 will be followed by a series of broad consultations to be conducted by the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth (OSGEY), including with youth organizations and representatives in line with paragraph 47 of “Our Common Agenda” report, to inform the drafting of the recommendations to be put forward for consideration of Members States ahead of the Summit of the Future.

  • Representatives of NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC in possession of valid UN grounds passes are invited to attend.
  • Civil society representatives are welcome to intervene by pressing the microphone button at the appropriate time.

International Migrants Day

Today, more people than ever live in a country other than the one in which they were born. While many individuals migrate out of choice, many others migrate out of necessity. In 2019, the number of migrants globally reached an estimated 272 million, 51 million more than in 2010.

A broad range of factors continue to determine the movement of people. They are either voluntary or forced movements as a result of the increased magnitude and frequency of disasters, economic challenges and extreme poverty or conflict. Approximately 281 million people were international migrants in 2020, representing 3.6 per cent of the global population.

All these will significantly affect the characteristics and scale of migration in the future and determine the strategies and policies countries must develop in order to harness the potential of migration while ensuring the fundamental human rights of migrants are protected.

SDG Investment Fair: Facilitating Private Investment for SDG Impact [registration deadline]

Facilitating Private Investment for SDG Impact | 28 – 29 September 2021 

The SDG Investment (SDGI) Fair is a platform for scaling up investment in sustainable development by facilitating direct interaction between representatives of governments of developing countries, private sector and multilateral agencies.

The Fair is evolving from an annual event to a year-round program. The September 2021 Fair seeks to introduce new countries to the SDGI Fair program and to increase interaction between investors and participating countries. Three countries will have a chance to present their projects to potential investors.

The event will also feature one-on-one matchmaking sessions between the investors and countries, online investor exchanges, knowledge sharing and capacity building.

High-Level Dialogue on Energy

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that he will convene the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy virtually on Friday, 24 September 2021, under the auspices of the UN General Assembly.

A series of Leadership Dialogues will feature Heads of State and Government as well as other global leaders, many of whom are expected to announce commitments in the form of “Energy Compacts,” aimed at achieving clean, affordable energy for all by 2030 (SDG7) and net zero emissions by 2050. More details about Energy Compacts can be found here.

The Dialogue will result in a global roadmap towards the achievement of SDG 7 by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050, building on the outcome of the Ministerial Thematic Forums and the reports of Technical Working Groups released in June.

Stakeholders Participation

To bring together businesses, cities, foundations, youth and other civil society representatives to announce their own Energy Compact commitments and mobilize partnerships for transformative action, multi-stakeholder energy action pre-events are also being organized virtually on the mornings of 22 and 23 September, details to be announced.

Energy Compacts registration

All stakeholders are urged to submit their Compact commitments by 31 August, in order to ensure that they are reviewed and registered in time to be given visibility at the High-level Dialogue on Energy in September.
