Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN (CRNGO) Annual Membership Meeting

Venue: Online and Baha’i International Community (866 UN Plaza, Suite 120)

RSVP required: https://bic-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEvf-uorDkuH9GvRCtVkcF-JfCsuk8EOTY5

As we emerge from a pandemic-induced hiatus during which the Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN (CRNGO) largely carried out its activities through the CRNGO Climate Working Group, the CRNGO Bureau invites its members to come back together, in community, in a moment of reflection, to be together for its first Annual Membership Meeting in three years.

The event will be hosted in a hybrid format in recognition of the fact that the pandemic is still ongoing, and each individual’s comfort level with gathering in physical space is different.

The purpose and objective of the Annual Membership Meeting is to help foster community and facilitate learning and interaction among religious and spiritual NGOs working at the United Nations as well as those interested in engaging with the UN.

The Annual Membership Meeting will open with welcoming remarks by members of the Bureau, followed by a consultative process where participants are invited to reflect on how their organizations have successfully engaged with the UN in the past three years, and share their perspectives on some of the challenges to creating change at the UN.

At the meeting, annual membership dues will be collected, the results of the election of the new Bureau will be presented and it will launch a process to create our 2022 to 2024 programme of work, striving to deepen the Committee’s religious community engagement with the UN.

Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN-Climate Working Group Meeting

Dear friends,
I hope this note finds you well! I am writing to update you all on a few considerations related to the next steps for the Committee of Religious NGOs  Climate Working Group (CRN CWG). Our next meeting will be on Monday, 1 February from 10-11 AM (zoom link here). Here is a bit more context:
  • Because of the CSocD, CSW, international women’s day and other winter/spring events, we would like to propose meeting on the first Monday of the month for the next few months. Apologies if this causes any inconvenience, but we are hopeful that it will reduce conflicts.
  • The meeting on Feb. 1 is meant to cover a few items (agenda will be here in the coming days). Namely: what are the various areas of focus we would like to prioritize this year? and what are the main ideas we wish to develop collectively? This, of course, in addition to other matters we will address at future meetings such as what are the opportunities and, specifically, how to engage with UNFCCC COP.
  • Finally, a few items that might be nice to refer to. First is the Climate Adaptation Summit taking place next week. Second is a link to a number of key reports, including the recent adaptation gap report. And third is a link to an interesting recent meeting between the Dalai Lama and Greta Thunberg regarding feedback loops.
Finally, as many of us are losing friends, acquaintances, and family members – let us do our best to keep each other in our prayers.
Warmly,
Dan, Beth and Julia, CRNGO CWG executive committee

[Webinar] A Shift in Mind-Sets: Faith-Based Solutions to Climate Action Obstacles in Agenda 2030

Dear Friends,

You are cordially invited to our CRNGO Climate Working Group webinar, a parallel event on the occasion of the High-Level Political Forum on the SDGs “A shift in mindsets: faith-based solutions to climate action obstacles in Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement.

Date: Monday, 13 July 2020

Time: 12:00-13:30 EDT / 18:00 – 19:30 CET

RSVP: https://forms.gle/uaYmVrwJWm6gLupCA

Organized by: The Committee of Religious NGOs at the United Nations, Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, Presbyterian Church USA, Sokka Gakkai International, Parliament of the World’s Religions, ACT Alliance, World Council of Churches, IBVM, Baha’i International Community, The Bhumi Project, Loretto at the United Nations, Anglican Communion

Faith-based organizations working with the UN system have specific climate action goals that they address across multiple UN avenues and modalities. They also have been active in implementing Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement through programmatic action and advocacy locally, nationally and globally.

With five-year reviews of both Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement in 2020, this year’s High-Level Political Forum, with its review theme of “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”, offers an ideal moment for faith-based organizations to a) consider climate action accomplishments thus far across both the SDG and Paris Agreement frameworks and b) identify and analyze obstacles to progress and develop joint strategies to accelerate ambition and related goals ahead of COP 26, particularly in the new context of COVID-19.

The parallel event is sponsored by faith-based organizations associated with an emerging Climate Working Group within the Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN (CRNGO). The Working Group is connected to the Interfaith Liaison Committee work at the UNFCCC Conferences of Parties, while also furthering climate goals in the specific context of the UN headquarters in New York City.
