Join us July 8 for “Addressing the tensions between extreme poverty and environmental conservation,” an ATD Fourth World webinar at HLPF, in collaboration with the Maryknoll Sisters.

This fascinating dialogue will bring together:

  • Activists from the Quilombola community in Brazil and the Maasai community in Tanzania, both facing
    threats to their lands, identities and cultures
  • Professionals in the field of social and environmental justice and human rights
  • International policy-makers in the realm of environmental conservation and management

Together, panelists will discuss how environmental conservation should not be used against the human
rights of people and communities living in poverty and will highlight examples of communities acting to
protect and preserve their environment and culture.

  • Seela John Sainyeye: Coordinator of Women Empowerment and Gender Equality at the Pilot Light Development Organization in Arusha, Tanzania
  • Leidyane Quilombola: Activist from Quilombo Nazaré, Maranhão, Brazil
  • David Smith: Chief Economist and Regional Coordinator – Africa. UNDP-UNEP, Poverty-Environment Action for the SDGs (PEA), UNEP

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2020: “Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all”

To follow the worldwide commemoration,

  • A global interactive event in FRENCH and ENGLISH will be organized on Facebook Watch Party at 11 am New York /3pm UTC/5 pm Paris /6pm Nairobi.
  • For those not able to attend the Facebook Watch Party, the video of the global commemoration will be uploaded on ATD Fourth World’s Youtube channel on October 17, at midnight EST.

[Short Film Screening + Discussion] Global Vision, Local Action

HLPF virtual side event: Global Vision, Local Action

The Baha’i International Community and partners are holding five sessions of a side event during the High Level Political Forum focused on local ownership of global processes. An 8-minute film profiling grassroots activities from around the world will be screened, followed by remarks from individuals and organizations engaged in similar processes and an open discussion.

Each of these side events will be capped at the first 20 participants to register, so please RSVP at your earliest convenience. (if overflow is necessary, we will find ways to be creative!).
