Women’s & Children’s Health and Well-being: Implementing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Amelioration of Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) in the context of COVID-19

The Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations; Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations; WHO Office at the United Nations, New York; International Council of Women (ICW Nations (CCCUN); Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association International are pleased to present a CSW65 parallel event:

Women’s & Children’s Health and Well-being: Implementing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Amelioration of Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) in the context of COVID-19

Access to UHC includes physical and mental health and neurological conditions, the inclusion of mental health in primary care services, as well as the need for disaggregated data to develop comprehensive health policies and are essential to address mushrooming non disease worldwide (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, and mental health conditions) especially for women and children. These must be addressed in the context of COVID the SDGs. Examples of successful and replicable programs and research from Australia, Europe, Asia, Caribbean, and U.S. will be discussed.

Virtual Townhall Meeting of Civil Society and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres

Dear ECOSOC accredited organizations with representatives approved for CSW65,

We welcome you to join the United Nations Secretary-General’s annual Virtual Townhall Meeting with civil society on the occasion of the sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Moderated by UN Women Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the meeting will provide an opportunity for women’s and youth civil society organizations to engage with the Secretary-General on the session’s priority theme: women’s full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

The virtual townhall will also build upon discussions from the Secretary-General’s virtual meeting with women’s civil society in light of the COVID-19 crisis, addressing ways to build back better and continue protecting and promoting women’s rights and agency within this new context.

The event will take place on Webex and will be webcast on UN Web TV, as well as on social media – Twitter, YouTube, Facebook. The session will take place in English only, however translation into other UN languages will be available on the broadcast.

The townhall is open to CSW65 approved representatives of ECOSOC-accredited NGOs. Due to platform limitations, attendance will be limited to two (2) CSW65 approved representatives per organization to allow for equal participation opportunities for registered organizations.

CSW 65: How to Challenge and Change a Social Norm?

Gender injustice is deep-rooted in social norms. Social norms are the values defined by a group and to which members of the group are expected to comply, otherwise risking disapproval, marginalization and/or exclusion. Religion and culture have a strong influence on the definition of social norms, including those relating to gender. At any given moment, many social norms are presented as fixed. Our event brings together gender advocates, who are challenging and changing social norms, to achieve gender justice. Tackling social norms related to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Women in Leadership, Child Marriage, Political Voting, Masculinities, FGM and Social Protection.

Male Allyship: A conversation around International Women’s Day

Aligned with the priority theme of the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the theme for the United Nations Observance of International Women’s Day 2021 is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world, on the way to the Generation Equality Forum.” In addition to celebrating the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will also ‘lift the curtain’ and bring increased attention to this year’s Generation Equality Forums in Mexico City (29-31 March 2021) and Paris (June 2021).

The Observance will feature high-level dignitaries from the United Nations and governments, as well as other gender equality advocates and champions. Speakers including the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Executive Director of UN Women and Eva Longoria will offer reflections on the day’s theme and amplify the work of the upcoming Generation Equality Forums. The event will also include musical performances by Angelica Hale, the Pihcintu Chorus, and Broadway singers.

This colour for International Women’s Day 2021 is yellow. The hashtags for social media will be #IWD2021 and #InternationalWomensDay.

Carolyn Pape Cowan, PhD is Adjunct Psychology Professor, Emerita, UC Berkeley. She co-directed three longitudinal intervention studies of how family relationships affect children’s adaptation. Co-author of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Life Change for Couples and co-editor of Fatherhood Today: Men’s Changing Role in the Family and The Family Context of Parenting in Children’s Adaptation to Elementary School, Pape Cowan consults internationally about the development, evaluation, and policy implications of family intervention results.
Philip A. Cowan, PhD is Psychology Professor, Emeritus, UC Berkeley. He served as director of the clinical psychology program and the Institute of Human Development and co-directed three longitudinal intervention studies of links between family relationship quality and children’s development. He is the author of Piaget with feeling, co-author of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Life Change for Couples, co-editor of four additional books and monographs and numerous scientific articles on implications for family policy.

Are women making any progress in participation in leadership and decision-making? Three NGO leaders ask on the eve of 2021 International Women’s Day

New York, 5 March 2021 (CoNGO InfoNews) – “Women enable a just, equitable and peaceful world,” said the presidents of Soroptimist International (Sharon Fisher), International Alliance of Women (Cheryl Hayles), and Associated Country Women of the World (Magdie de Kock) in a joint statement they issued on the occasion of the 2021 International Women’s Day on March 8.

“Women and girls of all ages deserve a seat at the table in public life, leadership and decision-making. Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. To make that a reality, all states, the private sector, civil society, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders must work in collaboration,” the women leaders asserted.

The statement also called on the sixty-fifth session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65) to take leadership in the development and implementation of new laws, regulations and social justice programmes that respond to women’s and girls’ under-participation and under-representation in leadership. The theme of CSW65 is focused on women in public life and equal participation in decision-making.

The joint statement was warmly received by Liberato Bautista, the president of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO), who helped produce it. The three organizations issuing the statement are full members of CoNGO. Soroptimist International and International Alliance of Women are current members of the CoNGO Board.

“Joint statements are an effective means of conveying to the United Nations our collective understandings of, and agreements and unities, as segments of civil society, on substantive issues that are on the UN agenda,” Bautista said. “Consultation and collaboration are valued good NGO practices,” he added.

Other CoNGO members that have issued statements on the International Women’s Day include the International Council of Women and the Universal Esperanto Association.A statement issued on November 15, 2020 and submitted to the CSW65 by members of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women Vienna, underscored many of the points raised by these statements.

NGO concerns on the overall agenda of gender equality, equity and justice are highlighted once again this year at the NGO CSW FORUM65 with varied program offerings starting on March 14 and ending on March 26.
